King's surgery successful

Kingdom rejoices following a day of anxiety over His Majesty's operation

BANGKOK: -- Thais across the country rejoiced after the Bureau of the Royal Household late last night announced that the minor back surgery performed on His Majesty the King at Siriraj hospital yesterday was successful.

The surgery, known as lumbar spinal stenosis, started at 6.05pm and was completed at 8.53pm without complications.

Earlier yesterday, thousands of people wearing yellow and waving flags, chanted "Long Live the King" along His Majesty's route to Siriraj Hospital. The King, in turn, took numerous photos of them with his digital camera.

Crowds of well-wishers were waiting for him when he arrived at the hospital at about 2.15pm.

Accompanied by members of the royal family, His Majesty waved to the crowds and they sang a song in praise of Their Majesties the King and the Queen.

Even after Their Majesties entered the hospital, chants of "Long Live the King" continued.

Well-wishers keenly gazed up to the 16th floor, where His Majesty was staying, and expressed joy every time a curtain was raised to show - with the help of a powerful camera lens - HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nari-ratana waving.

His Majesty was also accompanied by HM Queen Sirikit, HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirin-dhorn, HRH Prince Teepangkorn Rasmichoti and the Crown Prince's royal consort HRH Princess Srirasmi.

HRH Princess Chulabhorn Valayalaksana, HRH Princess Som-savali, and Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya arrived at the hospital before His Majesty.

Yupin Theekayu, 62, left her home in Samut Prakan at 8am after hearing a report on television that His Majesty would arrive the Siriraj Hospital at about 3pm. She spent three hours travelling but showed no signs of tiredness and said she would remain at the hospital until nightfall.

"I will come to the hospital every day throughout the period His Majesty is here," Yupin said. She said she wished to offer moral support to His Majesty.

Yupin said she prayed for His Majesty's good health every day.

Well-wisher Suthinee Intaratat said she had planned to be on hand to welcome His Majesty when he arrived at the Siriraj Hospital since the first time she heard he needed to seek treatment.

"I am concerned about his health, and I pray that he has a long, long life," she said.

Suthinee said she would visit the hospital again today to sign a get-well message for His Majesty.

Bang-ern Wattanapruksachart, a 67-year-old heart patient in a wheelchair, was among the crowd.

"Though I can't get close to His Majesty, I really wish to be here with throngs of well-wishers. I am overwhelmed to see the way people show respect and love for His Majesty," she said.

Several well-wishers were seen crying tears of joy.

High-profile figures who showed up at the hospital yesterday included Public Health Minister Pinij Charusombat, Deputy Public Health Minister Anutin Charnveerakul, Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin, Bangkok City Clerk Nathanon Thavisin and Dr Sem Pringpruangkaew.

Residents of Tak province yesterday gave alms to monks in dedication to His Majesty while others queued up to sign get-well messages.

Similar activities are taking place across the country.

At mosques, temples and churches, religious rites are being held to bless His Majesty and pray for a quick recovery and good health.

From today, members of public are welcome to sign get-well messages for His Majesty at Siriraj Hospital, Royal Thai Army units and other public venues across the country.

Foreign Affairs Ministry's spokesman Kitti Wasinondh said Pakistan's President Pervez Musharaf and Bahrain's Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Al-Khalifa had sent messages to His Majesty wishing him well.

Thai embassies in Japan, Sri Lanka, Hungary and Australia are displaying books for well-wishers to sign for His Majesty.

Every time I happen to see photographs of The King or images of the people as in the photo above, it

often brings a tear to my eye. I somehow doubt there is any other country in the world where the monarch is so truly loved and adored for what he or she is. His Majesty has dedicated his life to the betterment of the lives of the Thai people, especially the poor, and they reflect this devotion with an outpouring of love.

Just to see the sheer numbers of people in yellow on a Monday is proof alone of his influence. They will patiently stand for many hours just for a fleeting glimpse of him. Marvellous.

I cannot imagine Thailand without him.

Long may he be King.

Plan prepared for King’s return home

Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova visited Siriraj Hospital yesterday to sign the well-wishers registry for His Majesty the King.

Police yesterday mapped out the plan for His Majesty the King’s return to Chitrlada Palace when he is discharged from the hospital, although the exact date has not yet been fixed.

Metropolitan Police Chief Pol Lt-Gen Wiroj Chantharungsi yesterday met with representatives of other concerned organizations at Siriraj Hospital to prepare the security and traffic operation plans for His Majesty’s departure from the hospital.

“The meeting discussed the preparations to ensure security and facilitate traffic flow along roads and waterways, as well as the emergency backup operations, when His Majesty leaves Siriraj Hospital,” said Pol Lt-Gen Wiroj.

He said that the police will examine the stretch of Ratchadamnoen Road from Phan Pipop intersection to the Royal Plaza, and at the ceremonial arches commemorating the 60th anniversary of His Majesty’s accession to the throne along the route.

Pol Lt-Gen Wiroj said that the police are coordinating with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration on improving the surfaces of the roads that are on the route. “Residents and travelers in some areas near Siriraj Hospital may experience some inconvenience. The areas include Phran Nok intersection, the streets around Siriraj Hospital, Arun Amarin bridge and the roads between the hospital and Chitrlada Palace. We apologize for that,” he said.

He added that well-wishers who go to the hospital while His Majesty is recuperating there need not worry about their safety.

“Police officers, who wear yellow sport shirts, are on duty day and night at the hospital, mingling with the crowd,” he said.

Police are also working together with the hospital to screen the free food and drinks provided by generous members of the public for consumption by well-wishers, he said.

Prof Dr Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, dean of Mahidol University’s medical faculty at Siriraj Hospital, said that the hospital has no special arrangements for His Majesty’s discharge because everything for His Majesty is always planned properly. He added that the Royal Household Bureau will be responsible for announcing the date of His Majesty’s discharge.

Yesterday, Thai and foreign dignitaries and the general public continued to line up at Siriraj Hospital to register their best wishes for HM the King.

Counsellor Dominic Buhera of the Zimbabwean Embassy in Malaysia yesterday came to Bangkok to present flowers and convey his country’s good wishes for a speedy recovery.

“I personally highly admire His Majesty for his leadership of a great kingdom. All the people of Zimbabwe know about him and send him their best wishes,” Buhera said.

Former Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova of Canada also came. She left shortly after signing the register at the Siriraj Centennial Building, where a crowd thronged to catch a glimpse of her. “I wish HM the King long life and good health,” she said briefly.

Other well-wishers were members of the Assembly of Thai Artists led by Paichit Supawari and famous composer and national artist Payong Moogda, Royal Thai Police Deputy Commissioner-General Pol Gen Amnouy Phetsiri, former foreign minister Sq Ldr Prasong Sunsiri, and former deputy Parliament spokesman Suchart Tancharoen.

Nonthaburi Municipality Mayor Somnuk Thanadechakul, 150 officials and community leaders presented more than 20 big hampers of fruits and desserts to His Majesty.

Yesterday, Marine Department Director-General Thawalrath Onsira announced that well-wishers can cross the Chao Phraya River free of charge in a ferry between 9am and 3pm from Tha Pra Chan pier to Tha Wang Lang pier. The free service is available until His Majesty is discharged from the hospital.
