For water melon's drill the seeds, they is guy near here rents land, about 15 rie and grows watermelons he drills the seeds, and any that do not grow ,he walks the field replacing them ,

The misses said you can start them and transplant them ,any big area I would sow the seeds and replace if needed ,a lot easyer.

As for trees, May and June, befor the rains,I have tryed to be clever and planted them in the hot season and water them, most died,to hot .

I supose you could plant now ,and water them when the rains stop ,they should get a foot hold before the hot season.

A lot would depend on your soil type my black soil holds water, but if you have light land that drys out quick,I would wait for May , June.

But saying all this, a freind of mine plants fruit trees all the year ,uses the concrete rings, good for limes, and uses shade cloth,or better natural shade ,from a few large trees ,he seems to do OK.

My 2 stangs worth.
