Ebola outbreak: 'Five infected every hour' in Sierra Leone

(BBC) A leading charity has warned that a rate of five new Ebola cases an hour in Sierra Leone means healthcare demands are far outstripping supply.

Save the Children said there were 765 new cases of Ebola reported in the West African state last week, while there are only 327 beds in the country.

Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) said two experimental vaccines were being fast tracked for use.

It is the world's worst outbreak of the virus, killing 3,338 people so far.

There have been 7,178 confirmed cases, with Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea suffering the most.

'Massively unreported'

Save the Children says Ebola is spreading across Sierra Leone at a "terrifying rate", with the number of new cases being recorded doubling every few weeks.

I doubt they can even get an accurate count now as many stay at home because they are afraid of the clinics and hospitals.

If this ever hits Bangkok it,s all over, but oh, silly me, I forgot that Thailand now has the cure :) probably a strict diet of pizza and sand dabs !

Mountain Dew or whatever it's called.

If it's getting this bad then maybe it's about time to close some boarders with the exception of tracked med staff. Regular visitors coming and going is wrong at this point in time.

The Thai Junta should personally deliver to Sierra Leone the newly developed vaccine and cure for Ebola immediately! Not to do so would be a crime against humanity. Think of all the appreciation that would be heaped upon the Junta for such a humanitarian gesture. Of course if the medicine proves a failure .... whistling.gif

Whats it got to do with the army ?

Just in for a bash again I see.

I suspect the scientists who have developed whatever it is have already been in touch with the correct people as they will want it used as soon as possible.

After all they are a research facility not a private company which would be looking to maximize profit.

The US apparently refuses to even consider the idea. Better that Americans die than Africans be inconvenienced at the airport. http://www.dallasnews.com/news/local-news/20141002-ebola-case-in-dallas-wont-prompt-travel-restrictions--yet.ece

I believe that article says '...won't prompt travel restrictions -- yet'.

That was in the headline. In the body of the article, this is what was said:

"At the White House, press secretary Josh Earnest declined to say what would prompt the president to order travel restrictions.

“We live in a global world, and what we’re confident that we can do is to both protect the safety of the traveling public and protect the broader American public,” he said.

How Bad Could It Get? US Government Order Of 160,000 HazMat Suits Gives A Clue

There have been 7,178 confirmed cases, with Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea suffering the most.

Then compound that with this

Save the Children says Ebola is spreading across Sierra Leone at a "terrifying rate", with the number of new cases being recorded doubling every few weeks.

So let's say that 'every few weeks' is 3 weeks. That means if left at the same rate of infection.we can expect the following cases by the following dates.

Oct 23..... 14,356

Nov 13.... 28,712

Dec 4...... 57,424

Dec 25.... 114,848

Jan 15..... 229,595

Feb 5....... 459,352

Feb 26..... 918,784

Mar 19..... 1,837,568

Apr 9........ 3,675,136

That is just the next 6 months and has not taken into account that the bigger the numbers grow, then the faster it spreads because once it gets into the hundreds of thousands, all containment has gone and it will be all over Africa including much more densely populated areas.

Many of whom would be expected not only to come in and out of Africa, but also spread it to people who are non-Afican and there on a visit who then carry it back to their own host country.

Once this has happened, then the only way to keep it out of the US would be to stop ALL Americans from travelling outside the USA and ALL entry... Basically shutting down the US with ZERO in or out policy.

We all know that won't happen.

This epidemic has the potential wipe out a lot of humanity if they don't act very fast. Because based on those above figures and rate of spread, an addition 6 months at that rate comes to about 1.8 Billion infected, and that is 6 weeks away from wiping out all of humanity.

It is also possible that in 2 months from now, the number of cases could be doubling every week instead of every few weeks. A 'compounding trend'.

Yeah, god forbid we should hurt ppl's fluffy feelings and their right to travel. Poor health workers, they're the losers in all this.
