Four friends coming from Oz in Sept for 2 weeks want me to book 2 rooms at above establishment (for their first two nights in country) as they then intend to head up to Chaing Mai etc.

Question is the IR good value for money?

Or suggestions of better value for money in Bangkok for four first time holiday makers.

I've stayed there too, albeit in 2000. It's not in the best location, imo.

There was a Thai-society wedding going on there when we stayed, so the place was very busy.

Hi Mijan 24

Your request to this forum is whether the Indra Regent is good value for money?

As you have not disclosed the amount per room per night, it will be difficult to comment.

However, these are my observations about the Indra Regent Hotel, I have never stayed in this hotel as I have my own place, but have 3 friends who have all stayed in this hotel, before and after the refurbishment.

Although it is one of the older hotels in Bangkok, it has recently undergone a complete refurbishment, together with the Prathunam indoor Market.

The other attraction about the hotel (in my opinion) is the proximity in relation to many local attractions such as Prathunam Market, Erawan Shrine, Siam Square, sky train stations (Siam Square and Chitlom) and the majority of the large shopping Malls Bangkok has to offer. It is only two stops on the sky train to Saladeang station and you are in the centre of Silom and all it has to offer. The Indra Regent is very centrally located.

All major busses stop in front of the indoor market next to the hotel. Also the airport bus.

As your friends are only going to stay a few nights in Bangkok before moving on, I would stay in the Indra Regent. The other choice is the Amari Watergate (Prathunam) just around the corner from the Indra Regent, but at 3 or 4 times the rate.

Whatever you decide, have a wonderful time!

I don't think the IR is that well located, unless specifically, you want to be in that area. It's a fair distance away from the SkyTrain.

Stick with my recommendation if you are happy with the location and the price point of the IR.

Centrepoint is a good location but not cheap. I would stay in the Amari Watergate over Centerpoint as it's a real hotel whilst Centerpoint is a service apartment. Indra Regent is ok. But getting a taxi back there is a nightmare as it is very congested. Personally I would not stay in that area. Check out the Montien on Surawong as it the same value and 5 minutes to skytrain.

I inspected the Indra Regent one time when I was staying nearby at the Baiyoke Suites (which is a dreadful hotel BTW). I thought the Indra Regent was okay, but perhaps a tad on the overpriced side. As other posters have suggested, that area is pretty congested so unless one really wants to be in that specific location, it may be worthwhile to look elsewhere.

flightcrew, a cursory check before posting would have shown you that IR and Centrepoint Petchburi are at the same price point. Amari Watergate comes in at least double the price.

What is your point about a 'real hotel'?

Tell us why a 'real hotel' is better than a serviced apartment.

The Montien is not at the same price point. It's another US$15 or 600 baht. Also not the same quality as Centrepoint. Some may like the location though.

We have been using the Indra for over 20years, we like the service and the loyalty rates,we also stayed at the Amari Watergate in94 when it first opened, and all rooms were on special offer, the indra is the ideal hotel for the elderly, we like the area, its a pity the old lady of Bkk the Mandarin Hotel is going down hill fast used to love staying there in the 70,s. we always reccomend the Indra and have had no complaints yet :o Nignoy

I have stayed at the Indrah Regent in the past, but now fing that the Siam City Hotel is a lot better. For first timers from Australia I would recommend Siam City Hotel. It is within walking distance to the Indrah markets and Pantip Plaza (I know most Australians like to walk) and it is ony 2 minutes walk to Phaya Thai Skytrain station. I took 4 friends there in Feb this year and they thought that it was great. The other good thing about Siam City Hotel is the breakfast, beats Indrah's any day.

The other good thing about the Siam City Hotel is that there is less traffic near it and it only takes 5 mins (normally) to get onto the tollway.

But as other posters have commented it depends if your friends want to be in the middle of all the Indrah market action. I hope your friends enjoy their first trip to Thailand as much as mine did.

Again, not at the same price point. Up to 1000 baht per night more than IR or Centrepoint. Though, since we've have no feedback from mijan, we have no idea of the budget or requirements.
