6 Thai labor workers rescued from possible human trafficking in Indonesia

BANGKOK, 2 October 2014 (NNT) – The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security has successfully rescued 6 Thai labor workers who were lured into working on fishing boats at Ambon Island, Indonesia.

The ministry reported that the 6 labor workers had arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport yesterday afternoon to reunite with relatives who had been waiting anxiously for their return.

The ministry has announced that it will grant 6,000 baht to assist each of the victims in returning to their respective hometowns. If any of the ministries did not plan to return to their hometowns immediately, they would be assisted in finding temporary accommodation and employment.

Director-General of the Social Development and Welfare Department Mr. Puttipong Lertchaosit said it was a foregone conclusion that all 6 Thais were victims of human trafficking. Officials had initially confirmed that 2 of the victims had been robbed, drugged, and kidnapped onto fishing boats against their will. The director-general said the officials will continue to investigate each of the cases to classify them accordingly.

Meanwhile, Director-General of the Customs Department Thongchai Chasawas disclosed that there were still 4 Thais remaining in Indonesia who are awaiting assistance. He ensured that the victims will be assisted to return to the kingdom within the next 30 days.
