NACC urges two NLA members to declare their assets

BANGKOK, 3 October 2014 (NNT) - The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has insisted that two members of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) provide details regarding their assets and liabilities by October 3rd.

Deputy NACC Secretary-General Worawit Sookboon has confirmed that among the 197 existing members of the NLA, 195 have already submitted all the documents concerning their assets and liabilities. However, two NLA members who are Mr. Ratchata Ratchatanawin and Mr. Akom Termpittayapaisit have not complied with the NACC’s request yet.

Regarding whether the two would be held accountable by the law, Mr. Worawit said that it depends whether both of them had shown any intentions to conceal their assets. However, if it was simply a misunderstanding about the procedure, then no charges would be filed against them.

As for the 28 newly appointed NLA members, all of them must declare their assets and liabilities by November 1.

When asked whether members of the National Reform Council (NRC) are required to do the same as the NLA members, Mr. Worawit said that an official decision has not been made yet since His Majesty the King had not royally endorsed the appointment of NRC members at this point.

A lot of unusual wealth there.

Thai people need to wake up, really wake up (not the faux Red Shirt wake up) and not just demand change, want it and work for it too.

As most of the assets that you ascribe to him belong to his wife, I entertain the possibility that he may have married into a very wealthy family. He may even be from one himself.

Next step would be to implement a system in which any assets held by those in public office are managed in a blind trust, although who would believe such a thing could work in Thailand without the usual manipulation and deceit.

I'm sure they wouldn't object to that. After all, they're in the NLA to serve their country with no expectation of personal enrichment.whistling.gif

They should not be allowed any office, entitlements or input until they have declared. If this is not forthcoming within a certain time frame, they must be stood down.

AhJahn Somporn is a retired educator. I am proud to say that he is a close friend of mine. He has spent his whole life doing good things for the Thai people. I am sure that his asset declaration is true.

He is a frugal man who invested wisely in the holdings of Flying Pig Enterprises - turned out to be a very wise investment as he got the rest of his family to increase their holdings too.

So Prayuth's younger brother, only a three star general, has assets of more that US$2.4 million. I wonder how much Prayuth himself has, and for that matter how an army general happens to be a multi-millionaire?

Agree on both counts.

BTW I'm surprised about the likes you got, or actually the people who gave the likes. Somehow they seem absent when discussing something similar regarding previous governments.

Anyway the best we can achieve I think is a detailed proposal and type of 'trust for parliament/Senate members' and a framework for the legal base including rights, duties and penalties. To be introduced with the next, elected government at the latest.

Anyway, a quick search doesn't give me much (yet) on Jakthip (aka Chakthip).

Oldest news item from April, 2008 only has him commenting of the seizure of 1,000s of fake Asean and Western passports in Bangkok.

Still searching though.
