The guy's Morrocan partner, who he met via online dating, was also jailed for four months. Should have been more careful as in its advice to travellers, the Foreign Office warns that homosexuality is a criminal offence in Morocco.

One needs to be very careful when one ventures outside ones nanny state.

Sad state of affairs indeed.

Why did you need to bring up "nanny" state... do you have a problem living by societies rules? If, so, you are one of the reasons they have to make the rules... guilty.

Gay sex is legal in the west bank.

ILLEGAL in Hamas controlled West Bank.

In both places, no legal protections for gays.

You can't compare to pot. That's a choice. Being gay is what people ARE.

So what? Just because you are homosexual it does not give you the right to break the law in a foreign country. If you don't like the law in Morroco, don't go there.

A homosexual going to Morocco is coals to Newcastle.

Thankfully, no liberal is using the term 'Arab spring' anymore.

The whole Middle East and North Africa is a dump in terms of human rights and freedoms. Sad but true.

Another case of religious bigotry. Arghhhhhhhhhhh.

Why don't you tell the whole truth? The official religion of Morocco is Sunni Muslim.

It doesn't matter the what the religion is, it is just wrong. This was commonplace in America until the1 70's and also common in the UK and Australia as well. Not Sunni Muslim countries. Glad they have turned around.

Gay sex is legal in Turkey but gay people face severe homophobia. Sodomy is illegal in Malysia. Two examples of more tolerant Islamic nations (in general). Most are worse, often much worse. Yes this is a major human rights issue in Islamic dominated nations.

Turkey sounds a lot like Alabama

While I agree it's a ridiculous and deplorable case, the British are hardly in a position to point fingers at anyone.

Alan Turing who pretty much turned the tide in World War Two for the British by breaking the Enigma code and who created the blueprint for computing and artificial intelligence that is as important today as it ever was, was rewarded by his own country with chemical castration that drove him to suicide after destroying his genius and his sanity.

Bigotry is a human condition. Religion may be an excuse for the bigotry or provide support for it, but it would still exist in the absence of any religious doctrine.

Alan Turing – A Gay War Hero The UK Government “Hounded to Death”

A World War II British war hero. A man who helped the Allies to victory by using his mathematical genius to create a machine called the Bombe, which, in turn, enabled the British government to crack the secrets of the German Enigma code. Alan Turing was his name. But he wasn’t treated as a hero at all.

You see, Turing, who went on to create many new innovations including the Turing machine and the Turing Test, which is often referred to as the basis of modern computing, wasn’t given any Governmental or Royal accolades for his achievements.

No. Instead, he was subjected to chemical castration as a liquid “cure” for his homosexuality, having been found guilty of “gross indecency” in 1952 after it was revealed he had been involved in a gay love affair which, at that juncture, was still a crime under British law.

Turing was disallowed contact with the government’s mathematical programs of which he had been a part for decades, his security clearance was stripped, and slowly his life and its meaning was allowed to fade away. Turing committed suicide on June 7th, 1954, by virtue of cyanide poisoning, dying in Wilmslow, Cheshire, at the age of just 41.

Very true. But the British as others have, have modernised their views, equality of the individual..this is regressive.

Bigotry will always exist but it mustn't be institutionalised and therefore deemed acceptable.

As usual somebody is diverting from the topic which is not about drug mis use but the freedom to practice ones sexuality. So thanks for simple1 for pointing out that about half of islamic states forbids homosexuality, according to him. What about transgenders like Mohamed?

In Iran, they offer sex-change operations for men to make them women. This is to ensure that transgender men do not sleep with other men as that would be against the religion and the law. Once they have been changed to women, then it is fine as long as they marry.

Know the laws of the country you are a guest in. No matter how prehistoric they may be. If you don't like their laws then don't travel there. Simple as that.

When homosexuality is practiced rampantly by the locals, there's more than a touch of hypocricy with that law. I wonder how many local men ever face the courts for buggery?

Yet, like most Arab countries, young, male teenagers bugger each other silly because girls are unavailable. They call it Sex Practice.

either that, or the neighbor's goat...beware the teenager approaching with flowers...tomorrow's couscous will taste strange...

Yeah. Few years ago my ex-wife and teenage daughter went there for a holiday. Both are well traveled who like different countries, cultures etc.

They bought a new plane ticket and left early. The hassle they got as two women alone from men there was horrendous. Everywhere, the hotel, hotel pool, on trips, in the markets, sight seeing. Totally unbearable touching, pestering, intimidating scumbags. They found the whole place dirty, seedy and disgusting - the worse country they've been too.

But do the same to one of their women and it would spark a riot.

fair enough, though for a number of years in my life grass was essential for pleasure.

I'm sure many other have a similar past on here and not trying to be funny but admitting a past criminal history of drug use on a Thai based forum is not a good idea. I would get it deleted ASAP.

You have zero concern for me, you're just being your usual duplicitous self

The law in Britain on homosexuality changed when?

Now, when was slavery officially abolished in Thailand?

Some countries move on, amend their behavior and develop socially. Some like Morocco don't and still live with a mindset applicable to the year represented in the Islamic calendar. Then there are those that like to pretend to change, but nothing does really.

Never ceases to amaze me just how far back, in history, some people go just to prove a point, in case you missed it, it is now 2014 NOT the 1950's. You're harping on about something that happened 60 years ago, about time you moved on.

Of course I meant to say Hamas controlled GAZA, not West Bank.

So what? Again, it's a human rights issue.

True - you have to abide by the laws of a country if you choose to visit them or risk the consequences of breaking them if court.

However, that doesn't mean you can't express an opinion against a county's laws that you find reprehensible.

I think it is a fair point that gay people lack full legal equality and freedom from irrational discrimination in MOST of the world. Still, to this day. It is matter of degree from country to country, even region to region within countries.

You are misunderstanding my point, in your race along the track to attack me.

I mention 'nanny state' as many people living in their cosy little nanny states are oblivious to the fact that such laws exist in countries outside the cosy cuddly section of the planet.

Before you race to critise me in such a way, take a look at who you are critising so that you don't look so foolish. FYI, I have no problem living inside a society governed by rules & I've never been locked up but have locked up thousands who do have those problems.

As I said before, just because it's legal downtown Washington doesn't make it legal everywhere. Be careful where you travel was my point.

making all the wrong assumptions.....yeah ur guilty.

Seems more of an anti uk stance he is taking than an anti homosexuality one !

Homosexual?

Don't go to countries where it is illegal.

Hardly rocket science.

Most members here are in Thailand.

Many like women you know...

Prostitution is illegal here...

Are you trying to say that all women are prostitutes? All men pay prostitutes for sex?

Help us out.
