2 months holiday - what to do?

Gweiloman

Recommended Posts

I am taking two months holiday in Dec / Jan. Plan is to ride as much as possible. Any suggestions? Ideally, will get to ride all my bikes equally - PCX, KLX, Versys, Ninja 1k and ER6 (that's down in Pattaya).

Anybody keen to join up for rides? Can be slow or fast - your preference.

gweiloman, if you have never been by the mekong around nakhon phanom, mukdahan and ubon ratchathani, just do it.

great places to ride, stay, eat and best lao girls in thailandbiggrin.png

and from nakhon phanom all the way down along with Mekong river and back to bkk.

actually if you can pass Laos from Ubon Ratchathani through Chong Mek, there is a great place called Four Thousand Islands - Si Phan Don - http://wikitravel.org/en/Si_Phan_Don

man, love to ride for two months in a row, non stop.

Thanks ll2. I've done most of Northern Thailand but starting from Udon Thani up to Nong Khai and then west along the Mekong all the way along the Laos border to MHS and down along the Burmese border to Mae Sot.

I might try the Eastern border this time. Let's hope I get to meet some girls and hoes (though not of the agricultural kind, haha).

Are you thinking more on road or off road?

What sort of GPS do you have? Garmin? If so, then I'm of no help. If you have a Windows CE based GPS, then you would first need to download some maps (from GPS Underground or similar), and copy it to your memory card. I use my iPhone app (Tomtom) and that's good enough for me.

I will definitely want to do North Thailand again (love the twisties up there) but ll2 has suggested some new routes (Eastern Thailand, maybe starting from Ubon) which I am not adverse to trying. After all, it's not about the destination (other than the food and booze upon arrival) but the journey itself.

In terms of speeds, depends on which bike I will ride. On the Versys, I'm happy to cruise around 120-140, on the Ninja, can go faster (but will depend on road conditions, surface, traffic). On the KLX, wll only be about 80-90. Distance per day - 300 to 500 kms on average is fine with me. I normally like to start around 9-10 am and finish by around 5 pm. Not an iron butt and don't want to be fatigued unnecessarily.

Give me your thoughts and ideas.

Hi gweloman

I'm thinking this is gonna be road riding,,probably choosea versus for myself looking for good roads and scenic routes,im fine with any pace I ride my own ride thses days ,obvious my not scared to open it up a liitle with the right roads and conditions.

Don't have a Sat nav yet but it will probably be a cheap Garmin see loads of routes on the internet but need to learn how to enter them into a Sat nav to then get voice directions.

The eastern route sounds interesting and it covers bits of Thailand I have never been to,would definately be interested in.

I'm up for any amount of days if doing a loop up the eastern side and then back down the Burmese side I would like to stop of at chiang Mai and do a couple of the 1 day loops from there, they have good selection of rental bikes up there would be good to try them out on different bikes.

dates I'm pretty flexible will be down south in krabi for a few days first In December after that wasplanni g to go Chiang mai and sort bike out hen hit the roads .

You definitely can't go wrong with a Versys. Morever, the Versys will be able to tackle pretty much anything Thai roads can throw at it, be it potholes or road construction.

Sounds like a plan to meet up in Bkk early December. You could rent a Versys here. A trip to Buriram to check out the new Chang circuit could be on the books (there is a track weekend there on 6-7 Dec if I'm not mistaken) as this would be en-route in any case to Ubon. From Ubon, we could track north along the Thai - Laos border, following the Mekong as much as poss.

Assuming this gets off the ground, I'm happy to open up the route for any TV members to join up for all or part of the ride. Would also be great if some TV members would offer to show us some of the local delights around where they live.

Sure is a beautiful ride going up to Tak, and up towards Mae Hong Son....for that time frame. Chilly weather will make it cozy. I have a Honda Phantom, but tbut we just drove the car from Chiang Mai, down to Phitsanulok, across to Mukdahan, and then to Ubon Ratchithani. From there we went to Korat and are now in Ayutthaya. Tomorrow we go North to Tak, then to Lamphun and back into Chiang Mai. Good for 4 days of fun. Last month did the Mae Hong Son loop.

i use my galaxy note for gps and it is better, faster, smaller and more flexible than any standalone gps unit IMO. maybe not water resistant but plenty of water resistant covers for that for more protection, even real carbon fiber cases i have noticed:)

and for the route i recommended, this section has one of the best twisties and scenery in Thailand and not well known yet, Phu Phan National Park. A lot of places to visit there such as Queen's Palace, some caves, waterfalls etc.

https://www.google.co.th/maps/dir/16.6976663,103.7444372/Sakon+Nakhon/@16.644404,103.7642739,10z/data=!4m9!4m8!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x313ca35946f7da63:0x9377548ef8f91dd3!2m2!1d104.1348365!2d17.1545995!3e0

this section for twisties are not that bad too, Phu Pan Yan National Park.

https://www.google.co.th/maps/dir/Sakon+Nakhon/16.751852,104.5273603/@16.9611342,104.2579545,11z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m10!1m1!1s0x313ca35946f7da63:0x9377548ef8f91dd3!2m2!1d104.1348365!2d17.1545995!3m4!1m2!1d104.1820445!2d16.8926596!3s0x313cfbfa01b4cfe3:0xf5f0e0317d6ebb85!1m0!3e0

and this section, great girls:), food, places to stay and scenery. Again not well known yet. Gweiloman, if you have time and resources, consider passing to Si Phan Don - Four Thousand Islands at Laos Side from Chong Mek Border.

happy rides man! enjoy your holiday.

I'll be attempting something similar on the CRFM this winter, cover the northern part of thailand... but first I have to get used to distance on that seat... 100k days leave me sore...
The 80-90 is ok on the superslab sections (which I avoid) but adjust accordingly in the twisties.
I like the travel times.

Hi guys,

I'm planning an Eastern Thailand road trip with taninthai. Any comments on this route?

http://goo.gl/BmRwUf

Planned date is the week before Christmas, give or take a few days. Anyone along the route is more than welcome to join us for as much of the journey as you like.

great route gweiloman!

but instead of going through highway to reach Nakhon Ratchasima, you can go through chachoengsao - kabinburi and between kao yai and thap lan national parks. a nicer and curvy road.

check it out:

https://www.google.co.th/maps/dir/Bangkok/Nakhon+Ratchasima/@13.8369621,101.1993358,9z/data=!4m17!4m16!1m5!1m1!1s0x311d6032280d61f3:0x10100b25de24820!2m2!1d100.5241235!2d13.7278956!1m5!1m1!1s0x31194c93ba289745:0x5ae52a7582cb0a32!2m2!1d102.0977693!2d14.9798997!2m1!2b1!3e0!5i1

the rest of the route is perfect!

love to join you as i love those parts of Thailand but might fly to my country to visit family and friends during those dates:(

take your ninja 1000 and dotn look back, just ride where you heart goes! - or where the girls/hoes/beer/black label are plentybiggrin.png

It was meant to be 3 months - Nov till Jan - but got called to attend a training program in Japan in mid Nov.

All over Thailand, beer and black label can be found and bought at every street corner - not so sure about the first two items though, especially out of the bigger cities. That might be a good idea for a research project smile.png

I'm retired so permanent holiday.

I like to ride so usually up for road tripping.

Have some expertise in 1st 2 items but don't drink much.

I'm hoping for Myanmar mid December...see that thread.

Then want a loop through Laos & Cambodia.

I like eastern Issan too.

PM me if you are serious.

ll2, your link gives exactly the same route as mine?

I know what you mean about going through or around Khao Yai.. But as we are also planning a Northern Thailand trip after that (taking in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, MHS etc etc), it won't be a big deal to miss the roads around Khao Yai / Wang Nam Kaeo this time round.

yes, same. just reaching Nakhon Ratchasima from Kabinburi instead of highway.

just recommendation but if you have plans to go North, not a big deal, yes.
