I wonder if someone could clarify this for me. MAKIANG is listed under the following 2 scientific names:

1. Cleistocalyx nervosus var. paniala (myrtaceae) - English unknown

2. Cleistocalyx operculatus var. paniala - water banyan

Does anyone know which is correct?

I don't know but one website (http://www.fruitipedia.com/ma-kiang_cleistocalyx_operculatus.htm) lists "Cleistocalyx operculatus" and "Cleistocalyx nervosum" as synonyms.

There's been a bit of flip flopping with the naming. See (in Thai) http://www.rspg.org/makiang/mg1.htm for discussion. They may, or may not, be the same species.
