It would depend on where on Phuket and what kind of illegal activity.

Exactly. We would need to know what tambon and what sort of 'illegal' activity to be able to provide relevent information.

She is in Rawai.

I'm not sure what's going on but now she's gone missing. Talk to her 2 weeks ago now gone.

I would tell her to call her doctor first - because if she reports the illegal activity, she will need him. biggrin.png

yo IceMan how about this, I ask for some info, if you don't have that info then off, this is serious shit.

She part of my family she lives in Rawai now she's gone Missing. I'm in Hawaii now and it would be great to get some real help from other people not a bunch of your insta crap. I'm not asking where I can buy a Toothbrush maybe trying to save someone from Harm.

Take a long hard look in the mirror and look deep inside your self. Who are you?

Aloha

In fairness. You have been very vague in your original post.

What you judge as serious might not be as bad as the friend is making out.

You aren't here and that's probably the problem.

Need more details if you want a proper answer.

With a Loan Shark involved and 500,000 bht Chanote land in the balance.

I think that's kind of a very serious situation. IMHO

No land for family no nothing if I cannot figure this stuff out.

People handing over a chanote title as collateral does not mean that the person possessing it gets the land.

The owner of the land can just go to the land office, claim that the original land title paper is lost and get a replacement.

For the loan sharks to actually get the land, it has to be transferred into their name by the owner and then, taxes paid on the amount of the transaction. The minimum will be what the government values the land at. Those figures are kept at the land office.

Not quite correct. The land owner must first make a police report. Saying that the paper is lost would be a false statement. The land owner must advise the police of the true situation.

This sounds a tough situation. The BiB are not going to be interested unless there is money in it for them. The money borrowed and accrued interest must be repaid before you have any chance of getting the chanote paper back.

Well that's a tough situation.

I'm not very sympathetic to people who get involved with loan sharks here. They know the risks. Poor life choices of others shouldn't be your burden.

Anyway you are probably dealing with some connected people and there isn't much that can be done.

It's dangerous stuff.

Do you love them enough to bail them out? That's the question.

do you know for certain that is the problem, thai's have been known to tell porkies to con a farang out of few satang.

you do need to be there as my wife found out a family member went as a gaurantor for someone who done a runner and left her in big big trouble.these people dont care a f---- what they do.so its no good you trying to sort anything out on their word YOU NEED TO BE THERE .

Actually, I think what has happened is what usually happens when people can't pay a loan shark and they get threatened.

They have done a runner. If you know where her parents village is, she is probably there right now.

The police are not going to get involved, neither will the local politicians. If she borrowed 500,000 she is probably on the hook for interest of 15K/mo. Most loan sharks won't want that gravy train to stop, so I'd tend to think that what KB mentioned above is a distinct possibility.

getting a grey market loan with a chanot as a collateral is common in Thailand and it's not like taking a loan from a loan shark where the collateral is your life. They do have a way to get the land seized and going to the police / land office to claim the paper is lost is not going to help. If it was so simple that would have rendered the chanot as a useless collateral and the whole system would not exist.

And as the chanot IS the collateral, the only risk they have is losing that land, not their lives. And BTW - the OP claimed "illegal activity" - wrong statement.

OP - if it is really a case of not paying back a loan which was given against a chanot I don't think you have to fear for her safety. You wrote that the land's value was 500K - you didn't mention the amount of the loan. Usually loans against chanot are for amounts much lower than the value of the land.

if 500,000bht.channot land involved then surely whoever gave the loan would be holding the deeds.so if she cant pay they will take the land or whoever went as gaurantor will have to pay.

as i said you need to be there, and dont say you trust them 150% because 3yrs.ago a thai visa member found himself in a simular position and i helped him to find out what was involved.well i wish i hadnt in a way.

Most loan sharks that receive the chanote have another agreement that the borrower always signs. If the OP relative got a loan from a loan shark, they have normally two documents. One is the document that she borrowed money and it includes the full amount with interest on lets say one year. If the loan doesn't get repaid their is a 2nd document and the OP relative has not such a document but the document claims for the money she received they bought her land. Its very standard practice and the loan sharks are not stupid. Their are thousands in the same position then the OP's relative.

or the third option just pay back the money. Taking a loan for 500k from a loan shark isn't very smart and I just don't understand why someone would take such a big loan.

I was going to touch on that subject but gave the op the benefit of the doubt.

I've known someone conned this way. Crying wolf for money when they arent here in Thailand to see the situation.

Sick buffalo and all that.

Sent from my LG-D858

Have seen it as well. My friend worked in the States and his wife said that a loan shark wanted their money or the house. A week later both the wife and MIL used a lot of gold.

If they know she has a fallang.

They aren't worried about their money.

If there was a loan on the chanote.

There pulling your heart strings to pity and help them.

If there isn't a loan then it's made up to get 500 K from you.

Either way

Your being scammed mate.
