79,217 signature filed to seek Thaksin's impeachment

BANGKOK: -- A student leader from Thammasat University Friday submitted a list of 79,217 voters' signatures endorsing the impeachment proceedings against caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra suspected to abuse power to enrich his family.

"The Senate should launch trial against Thaksin who have suspiciously dispensed his power relating to the sale of Shin Corp by his family and his stock transactions involving a paper company Ample Rich Investment," Thanachai Sunthorn-anan said.

In February, the Thammasat University Student Union spearheaded the signature campaign to impeach Thaksin in a bid to hold him accountable for suspected irregularities stemming from the tax-free deal.

The campaign was launched under Thanachai's leadership when he was the student union president.
