ford8
I am reposting my response from the Pattaya Forum http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/771478-pattaya-officials-inspect-wheelchair-access-after-complaints/ ref Thailand's Official attitude to disabled people, as it is so disgraceful I believe it merits a wider audience. http://www.jamaicaob...ically-disabled why it was buried here I don't know but for those who may be discouraged by the source here is a snippet....... BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- A court upheld a decision by a government agency to bar a physically disabled lawyer from taking a test to become a public prosecutor, ruling that the agency has the right to choose the "right person" for the job. The verdict on Thursday drew fire from civil rights and lawyers groups, which vowed to intensify efforts to fight laws in Thailand that exclude people with disabilities from a range of occupations ranging from teachers to masseuses. The Constitutional Court ruled 12-3 that the State Attorney Commission had not violated the constitution when it prevented Sirimit Boonmul from taking an exam to become a prosecutor because it deemed his "personality and body were in an inappropriate state". Robby nz
Would seem to be scant information on which anyone could pass reasoned comment. For instance; what was his disability, was there something else ? it mentions personality. There may or may not have been good reason for the decision in this particular case. Another point, are lawyers normally accepted for taking the exam without screening or is it normal for some able bodied lawyers to be excluded for various reasons. Its nice to know more facts before leaping in and condemning but that doesn't stop some as we see in so many topics.

Good luck with changing that mentality. That's what I was referring to before. Still I find it hard to believe that would be integrated into a high court decision. More like what the common folks might think. Edited October 26, 2014 by Jingthing

wprime
While I think society has a duty to provide opportunities for everybody, it should also have the right to exclude people from professions their disabilities make them inappropriate for. rhythmworx
Thais are scared of people who are physically or mentally disabled, not actually scared but scared they will lose face being seen with a person who has that affliction. No help is offered to them either. Just shows you the mentality of the majority of Thai people. "no he's a spastic, dump him by the side of the road" really sad IMO. Evilbaz
I am partially disabled and walk slowly with a stick. When I perambulate, I do so on an electric trike. I find nothing but respect from Thais - from assistance immediately they see me to even MIB stopping traffic so I can enter Bangla Road at night. If you are growing old disgracefully here like me this is one of the best places to live. Jeez - even at my age (or because of it?) I'm still " a prospect ".
