Flying saucers expect thai people to speak English? What next .... Thai people start making Yorkshire pudding

No - not exactly.....but English is the universal (expected/accepted/only) language for international pilots - your life depends on this as you cavort around the globe.....I'm not quite sure the "English" quaint/outdated/multi-bastardized version of "English" qualifies now-a-days whether the "Proper Brittish?" accept it or not......

I'm not sure if the folks in flying saucers are aware of this so we should perhaps post signs on meteors directing them to "English", "Russian", "Chinese", "Thai" speaking zones....so - when they get here they are able to communicate and make their demands/(take me to you leader)/(take me to soi 6)/(where's Nana plaza?)/(your women, I want to buy your women, the little girl - your daughters....sell them to me sell me your children <Blues Brothers>)

No one - in this world - or any other would want/demand/need Yorkshire pudding....does Spock look...or act.... that stupid?

Typical TV twisting the OP.

I'm pretty sure all other nationalities that don't/can't speak thai, communicate in English.

Right or wrong, that's the way it is.

Mandarin Chinese is the most popular language in the world (2B speakers)

Spanish is next (400k)

English third (350k)

SO by your thinking we should all be learning Chinese!

I think English is more popular. Not many people speak Mandarin out of choice

When dealing with Johnny Foreigner, I have generally found that pointing has sufficed.

Conversation that requires more detailed or abstract concepts, I leave till I go home.

I suppose sometimes counting on one's fingers might prove necessary, if there are commercial terms to be negotiated.

But if you have to rely on words, then your communication skills are lacking, or you are the victim of over-arching ambition

Must be from Bradford, move to Keighley, no such problems.

I've always wondered whether the Swedes, French and Spanish who visit Thailand have their own forums where they sit and gripe about the fact that 'the Thais don't speak the same language as meeeeeeeee!'

Many native english speakers converse with thais in english like they converse with english speakers.....always surprised about.

It's probably easier for Thais to speak to an IamSwedishbloke than a native English speaker, kenwhitameenanat, jimmy?

Only because China has the largest population it is confined mostly to China and not spread out like English. So you can't go off of just that.

More countries use English then mandarin.

Sales 101: Don't expect the buyer to learn the language of the seller.

buying 101: don't shop in a place that you dont understand whats for sale.

Our moobaan has huge advertisings in english, at the highway and all over the place itself. When you go to the "main office" to the "customer service" whatever department they named in english don't expect anybody to speak english there.

When you go to our own 108 shop there they can speak english.

There are thousands of houses here and they like to show farang and farangdogs on their advertisings as well so i think it's a shame nobody speaks english. Then also they shouldn't advertise in english.

whats a shame is you cant speak thai

Why would that be a shame? It's a shame you never have anything positiv to add to this forum.

Something is very wrong with your numbers. 2 Billion speak Mandarin and only 350,000 speak English? Is this data for a person's native language or first language?

Other sources put the number of Mandarin speakers at about 1 billion.

Given that the population of China is about 1.4 billion, and very few other countries use Mandarin as a main language Malaysia, and a lot of people in China speak other chinese languages, or even other languages altogether in the far West, then I'd go for one of the figures around 1 billion.

More people speak English in china , than in America.

As an American, it irks me that the invaders from the South have no interest in learning English and assimilating into American culture.

Then they get upset at the lack of communication.

I have an early version of Rosetta Stone that includes Thai and I'm going to study long before I arrive when I retire.
