Silom Cleared of Vendors

11-2-2014-4-21-06-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Bang Rak district officials, accompanied by police and military personnel today began clearing footpaths on both sides of Silom road of vendors and street stalls.

Led by Pol Maj-Gen Wichai Sangprapai, an advisor to Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra, the eviction followed an end of the two-month reprieve given to the footpath vendors since the imposition of the trading ban on Silom during the day time.

During the two- month period, the city administration tried to find new locations for the vendors so they have a place to do business. Altogether 244 out of 286 vendors have been secured with new trading venues.

Trading on Silom footpaths is prohibited throughout the day but it is permissible at night from 7 pm until two am of the following day.

After the footpaths are cleared of vendors and stalls, Silom will be turned into a walking street, said city officials, adding that the next targets after Sillom are Tha Tien, Tha Chang and Bobae market.

Daytime food vendors will be missed by many people which might cause a policy adjustment....as for the night vendors...several years ago the vendors along side the buildings were allowed to set up earlier than those on the other side of the sidewalk who had to wait until after rush hour...this worked out well for everyone including pedestrians......I cannot see all vendors setting up at the same time (7 pm) each night. As soon as police stop patrolling the vendors will do as they please anyway which is unfortunate,

Those big woks with boiling oil in are an accident waiting to happen,

most footpaths are not good enough to walk on,never mind pushing

through a crowd, and the pickpockets are not going to be pleased.

Thai logic?? Wouldn't it make more sense,to make the walking street first and move some of the vendors there with designated places for their hawking??coffee1.gif

Good point. If it was a true walking street, there should be room for the vendors and walkers. Can't see them closing it off to traffic, though.

Seems like some of you wont be satisfied until Bangkok turns into the place you came here to escape.

Often thai office workers complain the most about having to walk on the road commuting to the work place, the more well heeled ones stop in the benz to order takeaway from the car window blocking the roads too.

I live close to sukhumvit nana bts and same story there, all vendors are banned until 6.30pm and its a delight to be able to walk around during the day but be warned at 630pm there is a mad scramble to be the first to set up and its a circus until about 730pm

the street vendors still need to make a living, where will they go now to earn a crust, cant exactly sighn on unemployment benifit can they

says in the article that most have them have been relocated to new areas, ridiculous they were allowed to sell there for so long, there are markets everwhere in Thailand go sell in one and get the <deleted> off the pavement, food stalls are fine when they are spaced out but when you have a situation like in Silom it is madness to let it keep going on

There are plenty of little Thai eateries and shops on Silom for the local office workers to find cheap food during the day...

I don't think they need to buy copy CD's, hair bands, T shirts, sexual disfunction products, copy watches, and other crap trinkets during the day to block the streets and make walking dangerous.

This is a good thing.

I never once came here to escape clean footpaths and places I could navigate easily. So please speak for yourself, I never came to escape anything.

Vendors are all nice as long as there is a good space to walk.. more often then not that is not the case.

LOL nobody is escaping anything. We are all here for the girls! i the girls were not here you think we would be having this conversation? Now of course as long as the girls are still here we would love to be able to live it up in a civilized society, nothing wrong with that

For those working here on expat status who want to see the streets squeaky clean ... Chill ... you will be back home in a couple of years or less and when you want some fresh pineapple you can hop in your car and drive to the super market. It will be somewhat more expensive though. AND... Back home the company won't be paying for your housing and bills and no more cost of living expense over and above your salary so you may be complaining about the price as compared to Thailand.

Food vendors provide a service ... cheap breakfast, lunch and dinner to the thousands of Thai office workers who are making less than 20,000 per month.

Rubbish needs proper management with proper bins and better collection service. This can be done rather easily if the BANGKOK CITY GOVERNMENT has the WILL to do it.
