Even 1 Rai, and on a 99 year lease, and a signed affadavit that we would not move the land out of the country, would make many of us feel much safer regarding doing business here :)

How do you move the land out of the country?

Often guys get ripped off by Thai females, this is in part because we can't own land and want to have a house. If the government really wanted to help foreigners (they dont) they would allow us to own land up to a 2 rai or so. This would make it easier to keep possessions in our name.

It will probably happen when hell freezes over.

Always rent - never buy...

Sad that someone takes his own life, it a deed of a coward.

A real person would cut his lot and makes himself a new fortune....

"They tell us that suicide is the greatest act of cowardice... that suicide is wrong; when it is quite obvious that there is nothing in the world to which every man has a more unassailable title than to his own life and person." - Arthur S.

I haven't seen that the girl was a hooker or half his age. On what basis is everyone making these assumptions?

Was she a hooker? Was she half his age?. <deleted> people, have some respect. You don't know his situation, and he's not here to defend himself. What sort of low lifes would come on here and assume shit like that. Worry about your own boring lives and wait for the facts you bloody hyenas.

You're quite new here, aren't you? Welcome.

Was the note written in Thai, or Japanese? Certainly looks like a Japanese restaurant from the picture, and even if he had been duped, appears he'd still have a decent income. However, the OP does state 'apparent suicide'...although it's always a suicide involving foreigners.... foreigners are the hub of suicides, accord to the book of St. Thailand, verse BIB, Chpt 2: 1.1

So what you are saying is that the Japs need to send a handwriting expert along with some if their own police to confirm this was an actual suicide and not a murder coverup by the woman and the EXPERT handwriting analizer (not a typo) who verified the Jap wrote that letter as well as the Thai BIB?

Can you imagine the Thai po

no shop seller which knows Japan and is origin Burmese available ??

We see this story time and again on TV, and there would be others not reported, but let's be clear, the men make idiots of themselves by putting assets (often most of their assets) in the name of a person they've known for ten minutes.

Would the same men do that at home; meet a woman, often a hooker, buy property in her name and wait for it to be 'stolen'?

Suicide is very sad, but's difficult to have sympathy for his situation, for him, yes, but he created a situation, which for a Japanese (particularly) could be a slippery slope.

Listen and learn men. It can, and will, happen to you.

Where are the good old traditions? I mean, the Japanese used to disembowel themselves. Requires proper training and a capable second, both hard to come by these days. But before doing so, I would recommend that the Thai lady and her followership are properly dealt with. As it is, the man has done exactly what the lady desired, giving her the least amount of trouble. That can't be right?

I think a disgraced Samurai used to do that or I could be watching too many movies...

Oh that is the same thing I am always saying.. guys are stupid with girls half their age (good for them) but they think its love.. (stupid on them) girl thinks money and bye bye guy in sometimes with deadly result. Its not like we did not read about stuff like this about girls killing of their foreign bf's

Guys are stupid and you a champion of intelligence.
Besides your mode of reasoning consisting generalize about specific cases is probably the best evidence of extreme refinement ...

hellohello123, you need to chill, sometimes known as becoming more tolerant, or relaxing.

ABCer expressed his opinion, and he's entitled to do that without being called a '<deleted> idiot' by somebody who disagrees, i.e., you. Perhaps you could, indeed should, redeem the situation with an apology??

If you're in Thailand, I recommend a meditation course, and the temple in the forest out toward Sangklaburi (can't remember the name) just past the Tiger Temple is great, relaxing environment, good tutors, and great food. From personal experience, I can say that you will gain something from it.

I see a Japanese sign on the gate.

Probably his restaurant, but with thai 51% share. She may have snatched it away from him.

A warning to all about the 51% control of business, even if said thai did not contribute one baht.

Now they want 51% share and full control of board members.the noose is tightening around foreigners and most will move elsewhere.

That is the whole problem in Thailand.. as a foreigner your easily taken to the cleaners as Thais just don't want foreigners to own things and make money.

"That is the whole problem in Thailand.. as a foreigner your easily taken to the cleaners as Thais just don't want foreigners to own things and make money".

The worst part of the problem is: it's not just easy to take you to the cleaners, the system and the setup actively encourages it!

Where else in the world can you pay 100% for something, and then find at best you only own 49% which is going nowhere, except to freeloading Thai Directors who own 51%,of "your property" and paid not one single Baht. Later when you want to sell "your"property they have control of your 49%,because they have the deciding vote in "your company" (get the picture?)

And let's not start on owning the house but not the land it's built on,which is another minefield!

And Please I don't need a reply,or hear about dubious company routes,(which your Lawyer convinced you are legal) and which are supposedly foolproof investments, but in reality also steal your money,I have seen and heard of them all!

Buy or build a house and you will begin to see part of the whole dirty business! but that's up2u to protect yourself, Thailand laws won't!

We're heading a bit off-topic but I do agree with what other posters are advising.

I still buy land and build houses over there have done since 2001, but it's for the kids. They own it all. It's for them anyway. Hopefully they'll let old Dad sit on the back patio with a bowl of noodles someday, do the garden.

So go home and buy whatever you want. Without this law, all of Thailand would belong to rich japanese and Chinese and Eurotrash. Leave Thailand for Thai people. Next flight out in 10 minutes...

It's not just Thailand where as a foreigner you're easily taken to the cleaners.

You have choices. Why pay 100% of the price and own only 49%?? Beats me why anybody would even contemplate that kind of deal, but there are those who think there is something romantic, or 'big business' about owning a house or business in a foreign country.

There are countless stories of foreigners being scammed right through Asian countries. DON'T DO IT!! Rent....don't buy.

foreigners tend to turn into jug-heads when they come to Thailand.....who else but a 'jug-head' would buy something they can't own....in the name of "trust".....they deserve to be burned - geeze!

Have these Thsi's ever thought what if the western countries or developed countries pass a rule that from now on no thai can own any land or house just the same way it's here in Thailand for others foreigners and the Residency rules are so tough only then they will realize the point I guess.

Sad to see so many foreigners are cheated on a daily basis on this LOS. Yet it's always projected as foreigners fault.

No doubt the weather is great and the country is beautiful and it's cheaper to live in comparing many other countries, and no doubt if the foreigners stops coming to thailand then their economy will severely suffer. Imagine he hotel and tourism business, pubs, entertainment business, the food industries, all these 7/11 or mini marts, the Alcahol industry and the contraceptive manufacturers they will go bank corrupt in. I time.

Still time is there to respect the tourists and provide them with proper security to their lives and assets.

After all all these tourists have huge contribution in the tgai economy.

Best to marry closer to your age. I'm 65, my wife is 55

The dead Japanese guy was 37! Hardly old! You are guilty of transposing your experiences on to the dead Japanese guy.

Not so. Was responding to other replies .... besides, it's still sound advice ... :--))

Back in the nineties when the IMF bailed Thailand out, part of the deal was a proposed change to the land laws to allow foreigners married to Thai nationals to own up to 1 rai of land.

Having accepted the money from the IMF, they then somehow forgot to change the law.

If they wanted to help ... there first priority, and should be, is to Thais. Foreigners already helped drive property prices up despite regulations and they can always buy a condo ... just look at the prices of them around Bangkok which probably has a good deal to do with foreigners being allowed to purchase condos. I think at some point people need to take care of themselves when it comes to thinks like giving a girl money. Most guys who get ripped off would never do at home what the do here with women. I am not sure why they think it will have different results here. Certainly not saying this was the case with this fellow in the OP but when an older male marries a girl 1/2 their age or more, do the really think it is about a physical or personal attraction? Just like in the west, it is about a money and/or security and once that runs out so will the girl and chances are in the west you are going to have paid dearly too before and after it is over.

Nothing wrong with a man going out of his league but he just needs to be realistic and understand why the girl is in the relationship because it is not going to be the same reason as the guy in most all cases.

"they can always buy a condo"

Not everyone lives in a large town with blocks of condos available.

The second thing Thai's are told when they are born is that "Farang cannot own land ever - enjoy" we all know what the first thing is.
