When I try to view BBC iPlayer on my iPad via VPN at home where no one else is on my network, I get a lot of buffering. I am on 3BB. Even trying to download to watch a programme can take over 3hrs.

When I view in a local cafe, via my VPN, where others are using same network, I can watch stream easily with no buffering.

I did a broadband speed test and got the following:

Download 14.16Mbps

Ping 53ms

Upload 0.93Mbps

Can anyone please tell me, are there any other variables that I might check to try and cure this problem?

Thanks

Has this just started? The reason I ask is that both my True & TOT connections seem to be having some 'issues' with congestion on the routes out of Thailand for the past few days, more than usual, at least for me during the early evening

For me my Hulu app seems to be most susceptible and is generally my bellweather for connection issues and it has certainly been struggling

You should see if your VPN provider offers a "smart DNS" service like mine does as this would allow you to watch without using the VPN at all. There should be no buffering this way.

This is one such service: http://www.unblocktv.com/ (it is not a recommendation and I dont use them), and there are many others.

I don't use macs, so I don't really know if this will help or not...... I have found 2 things help avoid buffering when I use BBC Iplayer with a VPN (in my case Zenmate) firstly once I have started the iPlayer and it is running, I then turn off the VPN as it is only needed at the start to establish where your ip is from. The second thing, I start the iPlayer then pause the show for a few minutes and re start it. Both these things seem to help avoid buffering.

The only thing I have running in the background is Skype.

This buffering problem has been going on for a long time.

I use HideMyAss VPN, and will try the on/off suggestion thanks. Will report back how it goes.

Your speed test is invalid.

53ms is to a repeater in Thailand, not international.

You might try testmy.net for a more realistic test.

you will need at least 500kb to 1mb connection for standard video(without buffering)

Your vpn slows down transfer speed with encryption and decryption.

An ips spoof program would be better for your purpose.

Google search will reveal many.
