NEW CONSTITUTION
Abhisit to discuss chartwork: CDC

BANGKOK: -- Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has accepted an invitation to discuss the framework for the new constitution, Borwornsak Uwanno, chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee, said on Wednesday.

He also hoped that Pheu Thai party will provide opinions on the issue. Borwornsak said Abhisit had already expressed his willingness to voice his opinions and suggestions on the framework and the content of the permanent constitution.

Abhisit, however, has requested that the discussion be pushed back to November 24 instead of next Tuesday as earlier scheduled, as he would be overseas.

As for the rumours that the Pheu Thai Party will not accept the invitation, Borwornsak said the party had the right to refuse as it was not mandatory. However, he hoped the party would take part in the discussions as doing so would make for a positive atmosphere in the country.

BANGKOK, Nov 12 -- Borwornsak Uwanno, chair of the Constitution Drafting Committee, said he has written to all political parties and groups inviting them to brainstorm ideas for the new constitutionand also welcomed the youth's participation.

Mr Borwornsak said he sent invitations to all political parties and groups today and that Abhisit Vejjajiva, Democrat Party leader, would discuss the new constitution on Nov 24.

Phra Buddha Isara, a monk who earlier led political demonstrations against the previous government, will meet him to exchange views on the new constitution tomorrow.

"I invite all parties, groups and sectors to give information. This includes the Pheu Thai Party which reportedly will not join [the process]. We are open to all groups. Your participation will be good and your opinions will be considered but if you are unwilling to participate, no one can be forced," Mr Borwornsak said.

Young people can participate through a sub-committee that he will form, he said.

He acted in response to the request from the Youth Network for Students to participate in the charter drafting process. The network has proposed the minimum age of representatives in the lower house of Parliament be lowered to 18 instead of 25 years. (MCOT online news)

Hopefully this whole new rewriting of another constitution will have a paragraph inside that coups will be labelled as treason and no amnesty can be proposed in the future.

The new constitution will hopefully be written to ensure that coups are no longer the final option to remove abusers of democracy (there are more than one principle you know!).

It will ensure strong checks and balances are in place so a government has to listen and be accountable to the will of the people post ballot box. To ensure that the voters are not held in contempt for 3.5 years and treated with unsustainable promises for 6 months to win their votes. To ensure that corruption is dealt with swiftly and harshly.

It is good to see the Right Honorable Ahbisit offering his opinions that will benefit the people, the voters and the tax payers. It is constructive initiatives offered that will move the country forward. Bitter and twisted views, negative comments and a "doom and gloom" outlook is not what the people of Thailand want nor deserve. No one wants that except maybe 7% of the population.

I hope the PTP can come out from behind the shadows of pessimism, their self serving ethos and their "do what they want at the behest of the majority" attitude and use their energies not to belittle, condescend, attack anyone that disagrees or holds a differing view point, but to offer constructive criticism and advice on how they want to move forward for an accountable, just society.

Unfortunately that will never happen because they are the reasons the country needs reform.

Yes, yes, yingluck was elected...

Form over substance, again. If free speech and political "conflict" continue to be forbidden, there can't be any substantive discussion of controversial issues. That's unfortunate, because it is precisely in those controversial subject areas that open discussion is most needed.

And how does that matter when the next coup happens and the constitution get canceled?

Ahbisit will fit nicely in this like minded group. Obviously PT don't.

You are dead right Eric, Abhisit has the ability to think for himself while PT still rely on "thaksin thinks....................."

And of course thaksin orders.

Abhisit has enough common sense to know that if you want your ideas included you must be in there and be heard, not stand in a corner and sulk waiting to complain about anything that doesn't suit you.

Don't think Ahbisit needs much thinking and common sense with like minded CDC members. Just need to nod and agree and pretend to contribute. If he has any principles, he will join PT and not get involved with this sham CDC.

A coup is already illegal. How more illegal do you want it to be? How illegal does it need to be for those committing a coup to not ignore that it's illegal?

Do you think that writing in that no amnesty can be proposed will make any difference when a coup junta throws out the whole constitution as soon as they get in power?

Though he does have the propensity to order his MP's to boycott elections (2) and Parliamentary Bills (who knows how many times) when he doesn't get his way. That to me, is the political equivalent of standing in the corner and sulking. I won't go into the number of times the Democrat Party legal beagles have swung into action complaining to whichever court will listen to them......................coffee1.gif

A bit like Thaksin telling HIS bought and paid for MPs what to vote for I suppose. As for whining about court cases I think the PTP have no room to talk.
