Fire At Power Plant In Chachoengsao

Fire at Bangpakong plant not affect national power security system

BANGKOK: -- A fire which broke out at an Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) power plant Wednesday morning has no impact on the nation's power security system, EGAT Governor Kraisi Karnasuta has confirmed.

Mr. Kraisi told journalists that the fire at Bangpakong Power Plant in the eastern province of Chachoengsao was caused by a minor leak in an oil pipe's turbine drive part.

EGAT officials could, however, put the blaze under control within 15 minutes and it did not spread to other areas, he said.

To play safe, he noted, the first power generating machine at the Bangpakong Plant, where the fire broke out, was immediately disconnected from the EGAT's integrated power generating system and the state-run power authority's reserve system was, instead, put in use temporarily.

"EGAT's reserve system has a power generating capacity of up to 20 per cent of its total generating capacity; so, Wednesday morning's incident at the 400-megawatt generating machine has no impact on the national power security system at all," the EGAT governor affirmed.

The troubled machine was fixed and is now in good order, according to the EGAT chief.
