Nen Kham emerges in LA

BANGKOK: -- Fugitive monk Nen Kham Chattigo who once owned over a dozen luxurious cars and big bikes has recently emerged in Los Angeles after having taken refuge in France following his escape from Thailand a couple of years ago.

A photo showing Nen Kham seated on a dining table was posted on www.alittlebuddha.com on November 14. The photo was taken on October 12 and the website reported that the fugitive monk has been living in California since his arrival in the US from France on July 10, 2013.

The website reported that Nen Kham tookd a driving test in Sino Hills in October and had been seen driving in San Diego and neighouring towns. He was also seen driving into the compound of Wat Rattanapya twice but was not given a warm welcome.

The report said that the monk might be more discreet about his public appearances after his picture appeared on the social media.

Thai news is reporting today that the court had issued an arrest warrant for the thief, up on five charges. And they are preparing an extradition request. However Thai authorities are concerned that the US may not be so willing to arrest him. God knows why.

I don't know about the Thai temples in LA but money is pouring into some of the Vietnamese temples in Orange County; however they donate some of it to various important causes around the world such as the tsunami in in Thailand and the earthquake in Haiti. The older monks see some of the younger ones as being too motivated to make money but the most expensive car any of them drives is a Toyota Camry. The temples serve as important Vietnamese cultural centers - places for the older generation to hang on to their culture and for the younger generation to learn about it. Vietnamese who are at loose ends financially or spiritually can stay at the temples which have rooms to accomodate them.

I have not followed this story closely but my understanding is he is being persecuted because of things he did that are not illegal for an ordinary person but rather because he is a monk (religious reasons). If true, this guarantees he will be granted citizenship status in the US and they would never send him back to Thailand and nor would Interpol honor such a warrant ... even if there is just a suspicion his crimes are related to religion. No different than some radical Muslim country wanting one of their people back to execute or jail for converting religion while throwing in a charge of having sex with an underage girl that never was brought up until after it became widely known and publicized the person changed religion.
