Discovered human parts in DHL parcel boxes now confirmed stolen from Siriraj Hospital

BANGKOK: -- The five human parts which were found in three parcel boxes prepared to be set by two Americans at a DHL office were stolen from Siriraj Hospital.

The two Americans now wanted for theft have left the country yesterday via Sra Kaew border checkpoint.

The theft was reported to Bang Pong Pang police station yesterday by three hospital staff after report of the finding of human parts appeared in news media and hospital staff discovered human parts were stolen by two western visitors to its museum.

The theft was caught by the museum’s CCTV cameras showing the two thieves are the same persons who sent the boxes via the DHL office.

At a press conference Monday, Clinical Professor Dr Udom Kachintorn, dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital said the five human parts that were discovered in three parcel boxes that were being sent to the USA were in fact stolen from displays at the hospital’s museum on the second floor of the Aduyadej-vikrom building.

Two parts were from the anatomy section while the remaining three were from the forensic medicine display.

From the inspection of closed-circuit TV footages it was discovered that two foreign nationals had visited the museum on November 13 and they were the same individuals that had sent the packages, he said.

Clinical Professor Dr Udom said the items were relatively small in size and were put in open displays at the museum which made them comparatively easily to be stolen.

“Checking our records we have uncovered that all five pieces have indeed gone missing. Also after looking at closed-circuit TV camera footage, we discovered that the two men had indeed been on the premises,” he said.

Earlier yesterday, on being questioned by police, the two Americans identified later as Ryan Edward McPherson and Daniel Jamon Tanner claimed that they had bought the parts from the market place.

Both were later released when the police said the human parts that were preserved in formalin were considered medical parts.

Both were reported to have flown out of the country.

But evidence now suggest that they had most likely stolen the human organs from the Siriraj Hospital museum displays and the police were contacting the Interpol to get them back for trial..

Police investigation have now uncovered that the parcel boxes were bound for Las Vegas in the state of Nevada.

The two men have apparently left the country and investigators are now checking to see if they were hired by a third party to commit the crime.

Charges have been filed against them and negotiations are underway to extradite the men to Thailand.

Police forensic investigators today revealed their findings on investigation of the human parts that were being sent to the US through the Thai branch of the DHL logistics company.

Of the five pieces of human parts, three were from an infant and were made up of a foot and a skull complete with facial features while the remaining pieces were from an adult composed of a heart, a 6 by 12 cm piece of skin with a leaping tiger tattoo and another piece of skin that was imbedded with Cambodian characters that represent a religious tattoo to fend off evil spirits.

Authorities are now curious as to why the two men, Ryan Edward McPherson and Daniel Jamon Tanner who had sent the parcel boxes, would want to steal the human parts.

Upon discovery of the human parts after the boxes were scanned, the two men were questioned by police and released as they aroused no suspicion.

Investigation into the men’s backgrounds reveal no past history of similar crimes whatsoever and taken alongside the fact that in the past 50 years DHL had never come across human organs in packages, police suspect that the men were hired by a third party to steal and send the items on.

Metropolitan police commissioner Pol. Lt. Gen. Siwara Rangsiphram-manakun said “this is a case of theft and is not in any way an extraordinary crime because the organs were from deceased humans. Furthermore, the items were not damaged and represents very little in terms of monetary value. But what is strange is the motive behind the theft. Why would anyone want to possess such items!”

Custom records show that Ryan and Daniel entered the country on November 13 and departed the country via the Sra Keaw border yesterday morning.

The Bang Pong Pang police station have petitioned the Bangkok South District Court for warrants for the arrest of the two men on charges of theft and attempting to conceal evidence.

Police have determined that the items on their own have no perceived value whatsoever and would not be displayed at the Las Vegas museum as was originally assumed.

A bit of a parody site, sort of like "The Onion".....

Unbelievable they let these sickos walk and leave the country. Imagine this was your dead child.

It was on display in a museum, there obviously weren't a lot of sentimental feelings attached to the child. Would you display your child's body parts in formalin in a hospital museum?

Sure, just waltz right in what is probably the most heavily guarded hospital in the entire country, go door to door until you find dead baby parts, and walk out with them.

Sounds totally plausible.

Obviously not when you distort what happened as you did.

They probably didn't "waltz" in, and only certain parts of that hospital are heavily guarded, they didn't go door to door "looking for dead baby parts", they went to the hospital's museum where certain preserved human organs are on display. That does sound plausible.

The child's remains were on display on a museum, stolen and no doubt bound for a private collection. I don't see how it would make that much difference to the parent where they were displayed.

BANGKOK, Nov 18 -- The dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University confirmed today that human body parts in parcels destined for the United States came from the Siriraj Medical Museum.

Dr Udom Kachintorn, dean of the faculty, said he will file a complaint as surveillance camera footage shows that the foreigner who sent the parcels had visited the museum.

The dean responded to the discovery of five human parts preserved in formaldehyde in the parcels.

Police of the Bang Phong Phang station in Bangkok are handling the case.

Dr Udom said that the body parts had been removed from the second floor of the Adulyadej Wikrom Building.

Two of them had been kept at the anatomy department and the three others at the forensic medicine department.

Dr Udom said he would have a lawyer file a complaint concerning the incident as surveillance camera footage showed that the foreign man who sent the parcel had visited the Siriraj Medical Museum but the footage did not expose the theft itself.

He would ask police to find out if the foreigner had conspired with any curator of the museum. (MCOT online news)

So two farangs stole some DEAD bodyparts from a hospital museum, and then what? Lets send the world cop force out to find them and bring them back to Thailand to lock them up for years which will cost Thai society millions of baht. Isn't it hilarious how much attention is given to this farang 'crime'. It's like stealing a box of Leo in Tescos(if it's even possible) and then being bombarded as John Dillinger. Ok, it's quite sick to steal some bodyparts that you need for a movie or to freak your friends out back home but it is nothing close to covering up a double murder commited by the so-called 'ruling class' of this country. The funny part of it all is that the BiB let them go so fast without holding them a day or 2 to investigate more. I guess they let them go so fast because they were worried about more bad publicity so close to high season.
