Buying Car from Dealers or Tents cheaper than private sale

Those guys called tent dealers are all a bunch of low life's and criminals here in Thailand. I recently sold a very nice car. I checked several tent dealers prices before I priced mine. Their prices were 590,000 and 610,000 for the same year and model as mine only mine had substantially less mileage. Mine had full options, leather interior, new tires and 4x4 automatic trans and wood package. I had all service records from the dealer. I listed mine at 410,000 and sold it for 400,000 to a Thai kid that worked for a hospital. He got a loan from a bank but it still took me several months to sell the vehicle. This tells me that the economy in Thailand is tightening. Even with a properly priced car and plenty of exposure on the internet, I was not able to sell it quickly. I did hqve lots of calls from Thai guys and a few women even. They wondered what could be wrong with the car since the price was so reasonable! In the end, most of them wanted the car but they just could not come up with the money. Even the kid I eventually sold the car to got a nealy 100% bank loan because the banks apraiser found the car in most excellent condition qnd apparently worth every satang the kid wanted to borrow. Btw, the car was 7 years old.

As a side note, my wife and I took the car into a local tent dealer and asked how much they would give us. We were both curious. I had to laugh out loud when the old bunch of crows hovered around their bamboo sala table croaked out an offer of 300,000 baht.

Thieves and criminals the lot! TIT.

here is no system in prices for used cars,

i sold my MX5 A in Europe for 2000 Euro in January, in June maybe I would get 3000 Euro, and this car in very good condition, 22 Years old,

you can buy everywhere in europe in great condition between 2-4000 Euro 150000 Baht,

the cheapest ever here in Thailand was 650000 Baht up to 900000 Baht for a car older than 20 years

nearly 10 times the price you can buy this car in Europe.

If they would value the cars with real prices in Thailand than 90% of all dealers would be bankrupt because the money they owns to bank has no garantee anymore. But if Thailand want to have free trade agreements with Europe or USA than there can not be import tax on Cars anymore and this would mean, the car owners loosing over night 30 to 90% of their car values.

Or Thailand can not export cars to EU o USA and the factories will close because production is to high for the Thai market and japanese market

OP must have been looking at the classifieds on this site giggle.gif don't forget the low end stuff still 60-100 but percent insteadgiggle.gif

Yes, you got me, 1 million baht car is a low end, I wonder what your high end is

In all fairness, i do not think i need to see every car dealer sells.

No, not every car that is for sale, but you do need to see and check out the

ones that you find to be cheaper than the private sellers.

Otherwise you don't know if the car advertised by the dealers is for real

and if it is, what it's condition and proof of mileage and history?

My take on this is that most dealers are not to be trusted, apart from a few that

have genuine good quality low mileage cars with history to back up, and they

are usually highly priced.

Without a fail, almost every single car listed by a foreigner is more expansive than a dealer or a tent.

When car listed at good price, it sells within 48 hours.

The Mazda i mentioned in previous post, now he has dropped it down another 10K, so price now is 665K, which is still 65K more than a dealer.

In exactly 5 weeks, it will go down even more, adding one more year.

SO if one was not a fool, you would think selling now at current market price would be wiser than to keep it at inflated, into a new, extra year.

You say dealers are not to be trusted, its no different to a private seller.

If car has dealer service book, its not different buying from dealer or private.

However if its some garage service, rest assured mileage has been "altered"

There is a guy selling a BMW, private sale.

When asked about service history, answer was some garage because its cheaper.

When asked what has been replaced, response "i do not know" i fixed what needed fixing

Yet he is asking higher price than a tent.

Sorry but did you think dealers were a charity?facepalm.gif

Of course they offer and buy at wholesale price, they pay you out in cash and then need to sell the car, need to pay rent, need to pay wages, need to pay advertising and may be stuck with the car for long time.

my recommendation for someone who is interested to buy a second hand car is to buy it from one of the auctions of repossessed cars. Significantly cheaper than car dealers and offers on websites.

So how you know, if the transmission, wheel bearings, suspension, steering, coolant system or electronic system, wheel alignment, brakes, ball or cv joints, drive shafts, etc. are ok, if you buy a car at the auction?

Never hear any auction let you test drive the cars, before you buy.In fact, many cars are from different areas of Thailand, so it takes a lot of hassles to change ownership and many auction companies charge additional VAT plus some kind of auction fee at the top of the price.

AFAIK all the auctions have reserve prices on the cars, so no real bargains to be had.

I wonder about the guys who stumped up 1.4 to 1.5 million for the privilege of being one of the few first 3.2 wildtrak owners. Assuming a couple of years on now, how much you reckon they can sell them for? 1.2 or 1.1 lol

For the record I bought my truck from a tent. It was a 6 month process. First saw it and they were holding firm at 660,000. Six months down the road I reapproached them and we settled at 600,000.

Now the way I looked at it was this. The truck I bought was 2.3 year old with full service history.. New was 1,000,000 baht. When I bought it, it had 63,000 kms on it so 600,000 in the market in which we live seemed fair. I will probably drive it for the next 5+ years and resell it for a few hundred thousand baht and I am ok with that.

That's why i would never buy a second hand car in Thailand. Why take all the associated risk unless you are saving a big percentage over new. I have even seen s/h cars advertised for more than new.

But most likely easier finance conditions, so people not able to finance new can finance that way and still drive (almost) new. (as long as they keep paying of course).

In my case, i drive once per month if that, so spending money on a new car seems pointless, even with finance paying monthly for just 1 drive per month i think is silly

1-3 year old car i am ok with for the usage i require. providing its well priced, does not mean cheap, because we know used market in Thailand is far from cheap,

However at the moment, used car market is actually pretty good, 2-3 year old is 30-40% less the new car price.

Any connection with the quoted post that sometimes second hand cars are more expensive than new ones?

None, though struggle to understand how used car can be more expansive than a new onelaugh.png

The market on second hand cars in Thailand has prices still dropping at this moment, but not that much like a year ago....looking at the taladrod prices can indicate the change, but the best internet site for checking the prices is this one...

http://www.thanachartbluebook.com/index.asp

...and they will update their quotes quite often....so,OP,if you are looking for a particular car,you may find it in this 'blue book'... and if you don't like the price offered by the seller, you make your own offer...if not accepted, than move on,plenty of s/h cars for sale now.

Yes you are correct on both counts, have they changed the model this year? Just about to order one.

Do not think so,just looked at the website and offer is pretty good.

Aside from 90 000 discount, they also offering 0% finance for 4 years, but in the video the offer is from Motor Show, so little confusing

@stingray and giddyup: you are right, you cannot test drive a car before an auction. However you can inspect the car, start the engine, look at it in all detail. My recommendation would be that if you are not an expert, you hire a car mechanic to inspect the car/engine in detail before the auction. Auctions usually take place in the afternoon and cars are already put on display the afternoon before and the following morning. So you have enough time to look at the cars you are interested in.

Cars at auctions are from my experience about 150k cheaper than from tents/second hand car dealers.

Not saying you have to buy from auctions, but if you are in the market for a second hand car, go to the car auctions of repossessed cars, get an idea for prices being paid there. There is also a website you can look at how much cars were auctioned for. After you compare the prices, you will for certainly think twice before you buy the car from a tent. But up to everyone themself. Just suggesting because many people are not aware of this option.

Usually tents/second hand car dealers are the ones that buy the cars at the auctions. Often you will see them invest some money for the cosmetics of the car (new paint/maybe change some of the interior) which makes the car look newer and then sell it for 150k more at a tent. That's how they make money.

No hassles to change ownership of a car at an auction. You make a payment at the auction to participate in the auction, the remainder of the money you pay when you pick up the car at the government office 2 weeks later. Including all the paperwork, i.e. blue book, road tax etc.

Here's the link to the website for car auctions. Have a look at when auctions take place/what's been paid for in your province. And even if you are not in the market to buy one, go and have a look once at the auction, it's interesting what kind of prices are being paid for all sorts of cars.

http://union-auction.com/en/home/newwebdesign1/index.aspx

hope this helps.

Transmission failures, damaged wheel bearings, nasty problems with the electronic components or sometimes even a broken head gasket, and many thing else you can't see without moving the car.

U have to go there and see the condition of the cars. Clunkers are cheap, because nobody want it. Good cars cost the same amount, as on the dealer.

For example Point C30 of 26. Nov:

2009 Honda Civic, 1.8 for 446'000 THB plus 7% Vat plus auction and transfer fees, than we are close to half million. I can buy the same car for about 350 to 390'k at the tent dealer. And there i can test the car and drive it, before i buy. Sorry to say, but never see any bargain at the auctions here. Can't be, because many of cars are overfinanced (to many years, to much interest), therefore the outstanding balance is also higher than the value of the car, when they repossess it

My wifes daughter went to the expo motorshow in Nonthaburi as we are not returning to Thailand till next month. As well as the 90000฿ Reduction on the 2.2, on the top end model with the 3.2 engine they are offering a 40000฿ reduction. So many extras too, but not insurance.

No that's not correct. Repossessed cars being auctioned are about 100-150k cheaper than from 2nd hand car dealers.

Do you know where the 2nd hand car dealers buy their cars from? Ever attended an auction?

followed by another idiotic post

well what im thinking is.....i dont really care about buying a condo but if i can clinch a deal i will. if someone in patttaya has a condo up for 1.7 i will offer him 1m ,
