A friend has just had a bad accident here, he has travel insurance, the company has only asked for a copy of the hire contract, they seem to be paying although not sure as he says he is not sure, he does not have a motorbike licence, will the insurance company at some point ask for this and then refuse to pay? His bill is getting bigger and bigger!!

It depends on the insurance t&cs, they vary, see if you can get them off him, or look online. They are usually emailed with the cert.

I've seen policies where you need a motorcycle licence, others where it's ok if under certain size usually 125. If he has a big bike I'm guessing he is uninsured

They have told him if the bike was under 125cc they would move him to a much better hospital, he does not know the cc of the bike!

That (moving if under 125 cc) is really strange. What kind of bike was it?

Check the policy conditions, nothing anybody here can say without seeing those.

Just take into account that for all motorbikes in Thailand legally a full motorbike license is required.

I chat to him online so can not see the policy, he took the insurance out over here, I think he is having difficulty contacting the guy who sold him the policy, going by his name its a Farang, his bill so far is going north quickly! I asked him about the bike all he knows is that it is a Honda!

Ask him if it's a scooter? If so it will most likely be 125 or less. Maybe honda click or wave.

I won't ride a bike here for this reason and I'm very experienced back in the UK though. I would be insured I checked when I got the insurance. Moral to everybody, check the T&C's before you buy insurance to ensure it covers these types of things

Just talked to him, if it was above 125cc they would not cover him, he is still unsure as to what is happening! He has a broken collar bone, he is in Cha am and they want to move him to Bangkok for an operation!

Not sure but if he has a Car Licence i think you can ride a small MoCy as a Tourist.Lucky hes got You to help him..thumbsup.gif

That's a common mistake by tourists, it depends on the T&C's, some policies say you need a motorcycle licence

In Thailand you need a motorcycle licence from your home country or from Thailand or both?

I would imagine that riding a bike illegally would void any insurance ... All the ones I looked at stayed that I must be legally allowed to ride in whatever country it is. Some countries allow to legally ride with no license for under 50cc mopeds but a 125 scooter I doubt it

From Thailand is of course accepted, from home country is sufficient if not residing in Thailand (home license is valid for 90 days), if it is in English and has a photo on it.

It's all sorted, insurance company is paying for everything which I think is amazing considering he has no driving licence, he is having an operation this morning to sort his shoulder out!

That's great, was the bike 125?

I had a scuba diving accident once, bends and all that and needed a decompression chamber, so glad when I phoned the travel insurance company and they said they would cover it.

My mate seems to be having a nightmare, the insurance are paying and wanted him transferred to Bumragad hospital Bangkok, now the hospital are demanding more money as it's apparently not enough, my mate has backpackers insurance from the UK which cost approx 80 pounds! Nightmare!

Backpackers insurance should be ok, main difference is it's for a longer, I have the same 4 months, medical limit on these polices can be quite high including repatriation, so once they've agreed the insurance covers him he should be ok.

I do wonder if the medical staff milk it though..

Yes I think the hospital are trying to get more money from the insurance company, they have postponed his operation, haven't heard from him after the list saying " the hospital want more money"

Insurance company will be very used to this. Sounds like it will all be fine.

Got a picture of his injuries? How long till he flies home? Can he put his arm in a sling and change flight dates, then get it fixed back in uk?

The hospital are waiting for a response from the insurance company, he is in Thailand long term, in his own words "it's all ****** up"

Maybe it's a kinda bluff game they play, insurance company know they milk it so is making offers. Insurance is often covered to £10m so £4k or £8k isn't a lot.

Thread is over as he is now booked for his operation and all is sorted, sorry can't remember his insurance company but it is a backpackers yearly policy!
