Three Cambodian brides due back from China

Featured Replies

Three more Cambodian women who had been trafficked to China as brides are set to fly back to the Kingdom today, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The women, from Kampong Cham, Phnom Penh and Tbong Khmum, had all been duped into the trip to China's Fujian province by brokers, according to a statement released yesterday by Foreign Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong.

"While the women wait for their repatriation, the Cambodian consular has been providing them with food and a place to stay," Kuong said in the statement. "[The women] did not have passports, which were kept by their broker, so the Cambodian consular issued them new ones."

In August, two cousins who had escaped abusive husbands told the Post they resorted to sleeping on the street in Shanghai after the consulate refused assistance.

According to rights group Adhoc, the three most recent victims being repatriated today were aided by their families, who paid for their return from China.
