New charter may ban govt agencies from media sponsorship

BANGKOK: -- The new constitution may ban government agencies from buying advertisements or sponsoring media in any form to ensure that the media will enjoy press freedom without interference by the government, the media reform committee of the National Reform Council resolved Sunday.

Boonlert Kachayutdej, an NRC member and the spokesman of the panel, said the panel did not want to see press freedom restricted by the government and sponsorship by the government could lead to impartial reports.

Thailand to regain world’s No 1 rice exporter ranking

30-11-2557-15-45-18-wpcf_728x409.jpg

BANGKOK: -- October’s rice exports totaled 1.2 million tonnes worth 19 billion baht which is the highest of the year on monthly basis, said Mr Charoen Laothammathat, president of Rice Exporters Association.

Rice exports for the first ten months of the year totalled 8.77 million tonnes worth 139.8 billion baht, representing a substantial increase of 62.4 percent compared to the same period last year.

Mr Charoen attributed the export rise to pre-Christmas and pre-New Year demands and export delivery commitment to China, the Philippines and Indonesia under government-to-government deals.

He expected rice exports for the month of November to total 900,000 tonnes as exporters accelerated deliveries to the three countries.

The association president said that he is confident Thailand will regain the world’s No 1 rice exporter’s ranking this year with an estimated 11 million tonnes of rice exports. For the first ten months of the year, Thailand exported 8.77 million tonnes followed by India’s 7.7 million tonnes, Vietnam’s 6.05 million tonnes and Pakistan’s 2.7 million tonnes.
