Egypt sentences 188 Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death

(BBC) More than 180 supporters of the banned Muslim Brotherhood have been sentenced to death in Egypt over a 2013 attack on a police station near Cairo.

The attack took place on the same day as Egyptian security forces broke up protest camps set up by Brotherhood supporters, leaving hundreds dead.

Egypt has been fiercely criticised for its crackdown on Islamist supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi.

Hundreds of death sentences have been passed but none have been carried out.

The latest sentences are subject to the opinion of Egypt's top religious authority, the Grand Mufti.

A final verdict is due on 24 January, after which defendants may appeal.

Sentences will be reviewed by the Grand Mufti Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim who was elected by a direct and secret ballot and ratified by former deposed President Mohammed Morsi. I'm unsure as to whether he has any judicial authority, but if Shawki approves the execution, that will discredit the Muslim Brotherhood as a meaningful Muslim political force (already outlawed in Egypt) and probably sign his own death sentence. Shawki has opposed ISIS and Islamic extremism to such as extent that he has been invited to meet UKIP leader Nigel Farage to participate in a discussion on youth radicalization and religious extremism. But will Shawki go so far as to condemn the accused to death?

Sad that to address the disease that continues to sweep the world violence must be matched with similar violence, as in this OP. Egypt, more than many other States, is well aware there is no rehabilitation for such people. The Muslim Brotherhood are equally matched in temperament to the IS characters daily depicted in the media; equal, opposing each other in method, but both opposing non-muslims entirely!

If the alternative to death is a false GITMO-like fiasco where they later re enter the hate-stream, then yes, send them to paradise and preserve the State today. Obama also knows 'these' men will never be rehabilitated; in that instance this is why Obama releases them, and this is why Egypt and Al Sissi widely condemn the US/Obama for promoting the Muslim Brotherhood and facilitating the very threat that Egypt rails against daily- they are an existential threat to Egypt, and the Grandparent to nearly every jihadi group in the world. (Broadly, excepting some notable issues with ISIL, the MB is largely behind every jidhai movement posing a threat to the west today). The reason they have previously been banned in Egypt is because their thinking is totally barbaric and utterly theological.

What's the cut off point for genocide these days ?

Considerably more than 188, I would think.

Try telling people that Egypt is planning to kill 188 muslim radicals and a big-titted blonde. The inevitable result is "Why would you kill a big-titted blonde?"

If certain people seek access to paradise through murder and mayhem, why deny them what they seek?

The Muslim Brotherhood has never been a political force, since their openly admitted goals have always been to establish religious and non-democratic rule.

Indeed this is the only way to stuff the Islamist genie back into the bottle. The irony is that western liberals will no doubt condemn the Egyptian authorities for crushing a movement which would itself destroy western liberal democracies given half a chance.

I think the non democracies are leading the way fighting this disease. China banning Islam from schools and Russia banning Islam's second most holy (sic) book for its incitement to violence and supremacist content. Meanwhile the U.S government declined to designate the Muslim brotherhood a terrorist organization despite being petitioned to do so.

Indeed, all governments are in danger of the jihadi goal, which is explicit. There is zero ambiguity and nearly any fool around the world can listen to the demands of the jihadis, watch their actions, and realize they are telling the truth- they intend to destroy civilization. Only in the West, where the jihadi phenomena is being managed as a tool to undermine western democratic institutions and trust in the system, is islamic jihad being marginalized/rationalized. One might ask to what purpose would progressive or others seek to undermine the traditional values of the west? Like the jihadis, all one needs to do is listen to what they say, watch their actions and legislation/regulations, and overt aims to figure out what the end product is. Islam and the left share a great deal in common- only to a point, which is ironic, because at that point the Left would actually be islam's first victims. Totally amazing stupidity. Islam actually has a bit more respect for the conservative part of the West that the left wants to destroy than the free love anything goes debauchery the left espouses. Its an incredibility dangerous game.

There is a reason numerous articles and books exist exploring the fascinating marriage between the western left and islamic supremacists-because it is palpable and in the current US administration has found its fullest expression. They would be aware that there will be blow-back at a certain point and that is why, IMO, I think Obama overstepped with regard to Egypt- moved a bit to fast in installing Morisi. Egypt had banned the MB for a long time and has now repudiated the Mubarak coup and repudiated the US/MB alliance and is once again keen on its national survival, irrespective of the western meddling. Strikingly, a considerable portion of the GCC also aligns now with Egypt in opposing the MB. It is no longer curious why the west does not. The MB is being used as a stalking horse.

As far as I know the Grand Mufti's decision does not carry any legal weight. Then again, I believe most times there is an

understanding of sorts, in order to avoid too many discrepancies. So while the review is not legally binding, it is probably

not often that they are at odds anyway.

If memory serves, the last time one of these cases was up, the Grand Mufti approved most of the sentences, but not all.

British Embassy in Cairo has suspended public services for security reasons

The British Consulate-General in Alexandria is operating as normal, the Foreign Office website said

Interesting. If this becomes more than temporary, it will probably be an even bigger dent for Egypt, for tourism from the UK.

If Alexandria's consulate is operating still that is better than nothing, but will be unnerving for many thinking of visiting.
