Thai Army still waits and sees if martial law can be lifted in some areas during New Year

BANGKOK, 3 December 2014 (NNT) – The Thai Army holds the need to maintain the martial law during the New Year celebrations as long as the security situation remains unstable.

Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army Gen Udomdej Sitabutr said a request to lift the law in tourism areas depends on local situation. If it is likely to be unstable, then the law must be enforced continuously.

Gen Udomdej also called for cooperation from all sectors to keep the situation peaceful to facilitate the lifting of the special Law.

As for the report that a number of politicians had asked for permission from the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to travel abroad during the New Year, the Army chief said he has not yet seen if the list includes Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra, a former Prime Minister. He said however that politicians have so far given good cooperation to the NCPO.

Not exactly like they have a choice, is it??

"...as long as the security situation remains unstable."

Either the junta is extremely paranoid, or there's another reason.

My bet would be "another reason"whistling.gif

seems most of the corruption is already back to normal, the various "mafias" are back to plying their trades

They are just a bunch of bullies thugs and stand over merchants!

Bet they will be enjoying new year with family and friends.

Good keep the foot on the throat of the 7% but 7% must be sending shivers down your spine.

New year celebrations a worrying time indeed for the junta fun police!

No new years in Chiangmai as everything has to be closed by midnight under martial law. New years is cancelled.

Really? Blimey, that will be fun. Have they reversed the extension to 1am or is it just for New Year?
