What are those loud booming sounds that happen at night?

It seems every night for the last three or four days, I've heard loud echoing booms, often in quick succession around 8-11 pm. I like to think they are lightning, although more dreadful possibilities of bombs or something else may be true. Anyone know what these loud booms are?

I live on Sukhumvit 16 (South Asoke area) FYI

Could be the Good Lord. Happened to me once when I was with this girl. Long booms followed by short ones. Couldn't figure out what it was till it struck me: Morse code. It was the Lord speaking to me - I had been in the Navy - making sure no one else understood. And He was saying,"Put on your pants and leave." Which I did real quick and sure enough halfway down the soi I see her husband, very large guy, coming the other way.

Fireworks. Calm down.

Yes, that seems the obvious answer. In Pattaya booming fireworks are a common occurence and certainly to be expected for the King's birthday.

The O/P should be ready for both the western and Chinese New Year's. Guaranteed there'll be a lot of booming for both of those too.

I live about 300m from Asoke and can confirm they were fireworks on the fifth and there was a bit of thunder on Saturday

The same thing has been reported in the UK recently.

Are you plagiarising that to get some replies or do you have Superman hearing?

Not heard a peep in Nonthaburi (and I'm a light sleeper), so I know what I think ...

Gawd, the not-very-bright index on Thiavisa has leapt to the highest I've seen it in years. wink.png

Best put on your tinfoil hat - they may be trying to beam you up! cheesy.gif

I'm fondly recalling the old joke from my youth during the cold war:

Russian Guy: It's best we attack at noon when they test the air raid siren every day. That way, nobody will pay attention to the siren----- until it's too late....

There could be many explanations, fireworks for celebrations, giant firecrackers at a temple (yes, they let go big boomy things to give thanks), electrical transformers exploding (my lights go out at least once a year from that), thunder, construction work, etc, etc...

It's a big city, lots of things going on all the time.

Electrical transformers generally don't explode at the same time several nights in a row.

Living in the area, I can confirm that #8 and #9 above are the winning answers.

Honorable mention to #6, but not specific enough for the big prize.
