Klong Thom's Saturday night market to close down end of the year

Pavement vendors at Klong Thom’s Saturday night market will be allowed to carry on with their trade until the end of this month after which they will all be evicted.
There are about 2,000 vendors at the Klong Thom’s Saturday night market which covers Sua Pa road, Central Hospital and Klong Thom road.

Mr Wallop Suwandee, chief advisor of Bangkok governor, said that the decision to reclaim the pavements in the Klong Thom market after the end of this month was adopted after a meeting today between the city administration and Metropolitan Police Bureau.

The city administration has already set aside spaces under expressway and the old bus terminal to accommodate the evicted vendors who want to trade there.

Pol Maj-Gen Adul Narongsak, deputy commissioner of Metropolitan Police Bureau, said the bureau had received many complaints from the Central Hospital, visitors of the hospital and residents in and around Klong Thom market that the night market caused traffic congestion and inconveniences.

He disclosed that there are three groups of traders at Klong Thom market: traders at shophouses who put up stalls on the pedestrian’s footpath; a group of 67 vendors who have been allowed to trade on the footpaths and illegal footpath vendors.
