Naval officers question crewmembers of five Vietnamese fishing vessels detained for illegally fishing in Thailand

BANGKOK: -- The Navy yesterday intercepted five Vietnamese fishing trawlers and detained 30 crewmembers for allegedly operating illegally near Koh Kra off Nakhon Si Thammarat in the Gulf of Thailand.

Since September, 29 Vietnamese trawlers have been intercepted in Thai waters.

The five trawlers stopped yesterday were towed to Songkhla Naval Base in the morning.

The crew of one of the trawlers claimed the vessel had been registered through the Marine Department and produced documentation, said Naval Region 2 commander Vice Admiral Naris Prathumsuwan.

Naris said the crew claimed that they could avoid arrest by producing the document.

He said the authorities would want to know how the crew obtained it, if it were authentic. The vice admiral said the trawlers came from Kian Yang and Kamao in Vietnam.

The crewmembers face a legal action in accordance with the Immigration Act 1979 and the Act Governing the Right to Fish in Thai Fishery Waters 1939.

They risk huge loss fishing in Thai waters. Fancy risking getting sorted out by the Thai

navy.

They must really be hungry or greedy or both.

They are lucky they weren't caught in Indonesian waters, there they are using the boats as target practice.

The crew of one of the trawlers claimed the vessel had been registered through the Marine Department and produced documentation,

I hope they handed over copies and still have the originals.....

I would have thought that Vietnamese would have avoided the ghost island at all costs. Koh Kra has quite a history concerning the Vietnamese and fishermen.

People look at the Vietnam war and China's activity in recent years, and people are under the impression that Vietnam is always a victim of other countries.

In reality, the Vietnamese people are the same as others. They steal and cheat like other people. Actually, looking at Vietnamese people in England, Australia and Hong Kong, you might start thinking that they're actually aggresive people who don't shy away from conflict.
