Bt25 billion expected to circulate in Bangkok during New Year
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Dec 16 -- Thai think tank Kasikorn Research Centre, KResearch, carried out a survey finding that Bangkokians will spend around Bt6,300 per person on average for the upcoming New Year celebrations, prompting more than Bt25 billion to change hands during the holiday season.

Though the higher cost of living is pressuring Bangkokians’ spending behaviour, the think tank has found that over 76 per cent still gave importance to arranging activities to celebrate the New Year under a planned budget.

The centre has projected that more than Bt25 billion will circulate during the festivity, a year-on year increase of 8.2 per cent.

In the capital, residents will spend about Bt6,300 each on average during this year’s New Year celebration, higher than last year's figure of Bt5,700 per head.

Most of their spending would be for food, beverages, and travel, according to the survey.

Meanwhile, gift baskets remained the number one choice for New Year's presents, followed by applications on smartphone, which are expected to be popular among teenagers and those in the working age group. (MCOT online news)

Two policemen narrowly escape death from bomb explosions

NARATHIWAT: -- Two policemen escaped unhurt when one hand grenade and two home-made bombs were lobbed into a police’s lodgings in the compound of Bacho district police station Monday night.

The two wooden lodgings were however badly damaged by the bomb explosions.

Police said that as one group of suspected militants opened fire at a market in Bacho district apparently to distract police’s attention from the police station where another group was moving under the cover of darkness toward two lodgings in the police station’s compound.

Pol Lance Corporal Siam Temteh and Pol Lance Corporal Pannakait Srinakitja were resting in the lodgings unaware that the suspected militants were about to launch the attack.

Once close enough toward the target, the suspected militants threw one M67 hand grenade and two home-made bombs at the lodgings causing loud explosions. Luckily the bombs missed the targets.

The bomb blasts prompted several policemen who were dispatched to the market where gunshots were heard to return to the police station and briefly engaged the suspected militants in a brief firefight.

All the policemen escaped unhurt.
