BANGKOK, Dec 17 -- Thai Army chief Gen Udomdej Sitabutr said that the deadly attack at an army-run school in Pakistan that killed more than 100 students is not linked to the insurgent violence in Thailand’s southern border provinces.

Some 141 people, including 132 students, were killed while over 200 others wounded after militant gunmen stormed into an army-run school in Peshawar on Tuesday and exchanged fire with the security forces.

The Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.

The school attack raises concern over the possibility of terror threat to security in the Asia-Pacific region and in Thailand.

Gen Udomdej, who is also Deputy Defense Minister, said the army is not negligent about possible violent attacks in the Thai south and has closely monitored the situation to prevent any violence.

There is no connection between the militants operating in Pakistan and those in Thailand, he said.

The Pakistan problem is domestic but the authorities here are also taking precautions following the incident in the South Asian country, he said. (MCOT online news)

this is a joke, I read in another paper the Thai government have asked the Malaysians which Muslim groups are still operational in the south, because the Thais don't know who to approach for peace talks.

Reassured by the good Generals comments especially in the light of how well the army has managed to control the so-called southern insurgents over the past decade. Peacocks.

The average Thai has little knowledge of international news and probably doesn't care anyway.

Thai govt's usually dismiss international comments saying Thainess is not understood by foreigners but now we see the junta using selected aspects of international news to show how good they are and bolster happiness.

The Sydney incident couldn't happen here because of the efficiency of Thailand's monitoring system and now the Pakistani Taliban have no links to activities in the South. Why does the govt feel obliged to make statements like this, has anyone suggested the Taliban are connected to southern insurgents ? The way these groups operate they could be linked even if it's a tenuous one but Thai officials tend to speak first and think later.

One thing that won't be emphasised is that fuel prices are dropping in line with the falling cost of oil on the international market. Oh No, it's a New year gift from the junta ! Absolutely no shame.

Army generals are on their way to becoming politicians with nonsensical statements like that. That statement may be totally correct but is also totally useless and irrelevant to Thailand? It is not about what the General said, it is about reading between the lines and understanding what WAS NOT SAID. I can only conclude the the thousands of deaths (including women and children) in southern Thailand having nothing to do with "militant" Muslims at all. And that must make Generals and Thai people happy whistling.gif

Not unless the Taliban are down on the Southern Border giving out lessons for free and how do you know they are not, if the Indo's can sneak in through Malaysia , so can they. coffee1.gif
