My wife is speaking about to change our car soon. We have been speaking about the pajero and fortuner. I have read a little about the chechevrolet and isuzu to but I have no clue here....

We own a ford ranger 2007 now that the ford shop offers us 185 000bath for, I think it sounds crazy cheap but I am from Sweden.

Anyone have any tips about this? Pajero is more cheap but the salesman said it's harder to fix it if something is broken?

185K trade on for a 7yo Ranger actually sounds about right - when you factor in the current market, and that fact that it's trade in. If you think it's worth more than that, give us more specifics on the car.

There are no meaningful reliability or parts costs differences between the models you have mentioned, so just buy the one you like the best.

hmm salesman said....

...whatever it takes to move you into the option that makes him/her the most commission.

Finished it for you :P

Psst ...get the new xtrail. See review in yesterday's nation,.now if only a diesel : )

The OP is concerned about parts prices, so I imagine he's looking at buying used?

To answer your question on what one.

You as far as I'm concerned have 3 the Pajero Fortuner or the new MUX.

All do that they say on the box.

The Pajero like the Fortuner have their good and bad point's. The Fortuner rear seats don't fold down great if you want a large estate just take them out 4 bolts. Easy servicing hold their price reliable. Down they are now a bit dated.

Pajero I don't like anyway due to the large gap above the wheel arch but that's a personal thing. Seem very reliable the early ones like the Fortuner had a few problems but now seem to be sorted. Rear seat fold down but the boot space is a tad smaller than the Fortuner due to those bloody wheel arches. Seem to hold there price. Down side they don't have as many safety thing's on them and their seats/build quality isn't as good as the Fortuner well I don't think so, others will disagree, hence the lower price.

MUX as stated new seems so far a nice car but the one I test drove did seem to wander a trite on high speed bends not to dissimilar to the Pajero. I drive a Sportivo that has lower suspension so not easy to gauge between the other two, answer to that drive a bit slower seemed to have as much power if not a bit more than the other two. Down side cant say as they are new but it'll hold it's price Isuzu always do.

Price I'm not sure but I would think about the same as the Toyota.

Go have a test drive in all and see what suits you and your pocket best.

They all do different models the more you pay the more you get.

Tip don't get a petrol Fortuner they are at best rubbish.

agree with freedob43: choose between the fortuner, pajero and mux.Go for a testdrive in each of them and then decide. I bought the Fortuner but frankly all 3 are quite good. Don't buy the Chevy trailblazer, quality is not as good and resale value is very low.

Thanks for the information. It is looking the toyota way tho I have one in Sweden that I am satisfied with. And the fortuner seems to stay high on aftermarket price to so I hope it will be good.

I have also been debating whether to purchase the Pajero or the Fortuner. I have a Fortuner on long term rental but I dislike the fold up rear seats, the lack of rain sensor wipers (helpful on the long drive from BKK to Phuket during rainy season) and manual front passenger seat (well, that is my wife's dislike). Yet the Fortuner has great power and acceleration, and significantly outsells the Mitsubishi....

Can anyone comment on the road noise in the Pajero? I find the Fortuner quite loud, especially on the highway. Or maybe I am spoiled from driving Mercedes when I lived in the West.

I have had 3 Isuzu vehicles, they have all been 4X4 D-MAX's. My next one will be an Isuzu MUX. Have never ever had a problem with the first 3, always had them serviced when it was due. Normally dealers don't take trade inn's and I would recommend you cleaning it up yourself and sticking a for sale sign on it. Or you could do as I did and tell the Isuzu dealer that you want to buy that new one and you want X amount for it. He usually gets his mate from the local tent city second hand car yard to come and have a look. It worked for me when I bought a new one, both times from the same dealer.

Noise on the move is about the same - can be improved a little by aftermarket tires, but it'll never be what you'd call 'quiet' inside. As for sales, that's up and down - some months the Pajero Sport outsells the Fortuner, but most months it doesn't. There's a new Pajero around August next year, and if you're brave, a new Ford Everest early next year - both of which promise to lift the bar, even if only a little.

Thanks for the feedback IMHO. I didn't know that a new Pajero was coming soon -- so I guess we will see a new Pajero and new Fortuner in 2015.

Yesterday I spoke with a friend who drives a Pajero as a company car. She feels it handles better on the highway than the Fortuner (I also think the Fortuner can oversteer when at speed) but the Pajero lacks pep when accelerating, especially in city driving.

I really want to buy soon as the long term renal is expensive. But with new Pajero and Fortuner models in the running, the debate continues.

As a side note, I just looked at the Mercedes-Benz USA site and the M class SUV starts at $48,000. Not far from the cost of a Fortuner here...

Highly unlikely we'll see a new Fortuner until 2016 now. As for American prices, stop looking at them now. No good can possibly come of it :)

agree with IMHO. If you are keen on buying a car, do it now. There are always new models coming out and people been talking a long time about a new Vigo or Fortuner.

Too true, there is no point in comparing prices to the West.

I went to the local Mitsubishi dealer but they didn't have the 2014 Pajero available to test. For something to do, I did test drive the new Triton and it had nice acceleration, was very quiet, and had nice looking dash/electronics. Apparently the 2016 Pajero will have similar features (new engine, quiet interior, decent dash and electronics like NAV and Bluetooth).

The most likely reason they didn't have a 2014 PJS is because the PJS has historically gets a new minor change every January, like clockwork. Anticipate a slightly improved version (albeit with a small price bump) next month :)

Yep, the new Triton is a big improvement over the old when it comes the NVH, but the PJS has always done better than the Triton (just open the front doors and look what's in the fender gap, for example). I'm not sold on the Triton exterior styling though (I'm being kind. The words 'Mahindra' and 'Chinese Copy' are what actually come to mind), and I fully expect we'll see revised front-end metal from them in 2-3 years time. Hopefully they'll debut the fixes for the dated parts of the design in the new PJS.

From what we can see the 2015 Fortuner looks like yet another facelift.

I'm somewhat amazed by this car. I bought a Fortuner now nearly 8 years ago. Walked into the dealership last week to check out the 2014 model. Open the door. Everything looks the same. Hold on, some changes - right that model doesn't have the faux wood trim, and isn't quite as nice as my now positively ancient top end model. No reason to upgrade.

In all that time Toyota has made the turbo a little better, and I think the suspension might have seen a small improvement too?! They're basically selling the same car for 8 years.

Should they decide to actually make a new 2015 model I'll probably get it. No complaints, great car.

O.P ' but I am from Sweden. '

so what is wrong with a 2011 Volvo XC90 D5 ? 4x4, Diesel and 7 Seats....... new cost 3.7 million yet a 2010 or 2011 cost around 1 million.. would have thought a much better SUV/car than a Fortuner ??

Not diesel but a number of people that did have a 7 seat Toyota Wish [long since discontinued] now have a Proton Exora 7 seats.. Brand New turbo model is 660 - 870,000 baht.

Nope not a Volvo in thailand. Expensive service and spare parts... hard to find shops to.

Have to check the proton then :/

Depends what your looking for, non diesel there are others

Honda Freed..... 7 seats 800 - 950,000 baht brand new

Suzuki Ertiga..... 7 seats 550 - 680.000 brand new

if not brand new this one could be an option ?.. 7 seats........ http://showroom.one2car.com/carDetail.aspx?car_id=h20140227 or http://www.taladrod.com/w20/Search/CarDet40.aspx?cib=1533824 lots of others..

what about a 2013 Chevy Trailblazer around 800,000 for the top model LTZ..... almost ½ new price... even the lower spec models are around ½ the new price... lots For Sale

even something like this a few months old, is a good saving on brand new http://www.taladrod.com/w20/Search/CarDet40.aspx?cib=1534413 or http://www.taladrod.com/w20/Search/CarDet40.aspx?cib=1526138

and just a few months old Fortuner high spec model diesel.... http://www.taladrod.com/w20/Search/CarDet40.aspx?cib=1518809

Thanks for the info about the proton. I have read some reviews and it seems lika a good bargain. 5 years free service and warranty 150000km is very welcome to.

For us its a 7 seater that will be driven 1-2 months/year by us and then very little in the rest of the year

They will go to the shop this week and look! Cheers

Have you considered the Captiva?

I brought one for my wife 5 years ago, 65,000kms now, never any problems with it. I also think that the rear seating to make 7 seats is way better than the Fortuner.

Only downside is that I don't think that the resale value is that good now as there are so many 2nd hand ones on the market.

BUT if you are looking for second hand I have seen 3-4 year old top of the range models going for HALF of their new price

The Top LTZ Diesel new = 1.7 million

The Top LTZ Petrol new = 1.5 million

oddly 2nd hand 2012 both models are around 800,000 baht. as you say lots on the 2nd hand market...

The smaller 7 seat one that came out last year Chevy 'Spin' only comes in top LTZ trim = new 760,000 baht, seen them 2nd hand at 500,000 baht.
