Am I able to apply for a Thai passport?

Featured Replies

Hi all, I'm a 32 year old guy from Belgium, born and raised. My mom was born in Thailand (grandfather caucasian and grandmother 100% Thai) and lived there until the age of 10-11. After that, she moved to Belgium and has been living here for around 40+ years now. She still has relatives living in Thailand. Currently my mom doesn't have a Thai ID card, but would like to apply for one. Does she need to go to the amphoe with her Thai birth certificate, or is she able to do it in Belgium? And my main question: am I able to obtain a Thai ID/passport myself through my mother this way, or is this not possible?

Thank you for reading.

I would imagine that the Thai Embassy in Brussels would be able to give you definitive answers to these questions and more.

Yes, you take, Your birth certificate, her birth certificate, to Thai embassy in Belgium.

(you should take your fathers birth certificate and your parents marriage certificate with you, but I don't think they are vital)

If she has birth certificate showing that she is Thai all she can go to an Amphoe. If she is not registered in a house book she would have to get that done in order to get a Thai ID card.

If she is Thai from birth you are also a Thai national from birth. You need a Thai birth certificate to prove it by applying for it at the embassy in Belgium. Then you could get registered in a house book, get a Thai ID card and passport.

The OP might want to check on the compatability of Thai citizenship with others he might have already. Also he might be well-advised to check on the military service requirement. As a person who is definitely Thai even though they don't have an ID card etc, is there a requirement, or a penalty for missing military service?

Apart from that -- Nice New Years present for him. :)

Op is 32 and will not be called for the draft, that is for people under 30 years old.

The mother can contact the embassy first, as some Thai embassies now can provide a Thai ID-card. (not sure if that is only for renewal).

Belgium does not accept for its passport holders additional passports from other countries.

I know several Belgian's that applied for a UK passport, when they received the applied UK passports then the UK Home Office did inform the Belgian Embassy in London about it, as a result the Belgian Embassy cancelled the passport of their Belgian nationals.

On what grounds did they apply for the UK passport, you have only given half a story

That must have been time ago.

Since 28 April 2008, Belgian law permits all Belgian nationals to obtain any other nationality without losing their Belgian nationality (unless the law about the other newly acquired citizenship or nationality requires the loss, of course)

And, even before 2008, it was anyway possible for a person with citizenship by birth (that is different from acquiring citizenship), to be a dual national.

Everyone of those fellows moved to England and worked in London, each of them enjoyed their life style in London, they married UK girls (English and Scottish) and intended to take part in general activities including future political elections, hence their application for a UK passport.

Another question, if his mother was not a thai citizen at the time of his birth, can he still get thai citizenship? And what if someone obtains thai citizenship late in life, can their adult children also obtain citizenship through their parent being a thai citizen?

If she was not a Thai by birth at the time he was born he would not be able to get Thai nationality.

Nationality cannot be obtained after the fact if the parent was not a Thai national at the time of birth.
