It is mentioned that if you have a work permit no medical is required.

Has this been confirmed ?

just jump in any clinic 2 minutes and 100baht later you have one

A medical certificate is not required for renewing a 5 year licence (in Bangkok anyway).

My recollection was no medical needed but you need to take your tax/NI card.

What is a tax/NI Card ?

Did not make it there. Got pulled by the police on a road block on the railway bypass road. They kept my licence and told me to come to the station tomorrow to pay fine and collect.

Very annoying as Iam leaving for Hua Hin early in the morning.

Upgrading from 1 year to 5-year, you need a medical. A straight renewal of a 5-year you do not need the medical.
