'LINE messages being monitored' in Thailand

Good thing the PM is in China and can pick up tips on how to control the country, oh sorry I mean impart even more happiness.

Of course for real, prime monitoring tips he should go to the USA, UK or maybe even Australia.

You were born, raised and educated in the west. In all likelihood, it is because of this you can afford to live here. If your health fails or your luck takes a turn for the worse, you can return and seek help, yet you never seem to have a good word for western people or society.

Your attitude is contemptible in my opinion.

Discombobulated nonsense.

He was just pointing out the reality that Snowden shared with the world that in terms of internet and communications monitoring capability that the USA far surpasses China and certainly exceeds the trivial capability of Thai authorities monitoring Line.

Thankyou for your clarification, but I can read.

"The sticker production cost is Bt6.6 million. With VAT, the cost reaches Bt7.1 million," he said.

You was had mate!!

That's a comforting thought that will embolden the more egregious Thai-bashers.

Generally, government interference in social media works out poorly.

It's a sort of online equivalent of 'dad dancing'.

People -- especially the young -- flock to social media precisely because it is a world apart from 'the authorities', whether that be parental or other.

If they get 3.5 million downloads of their stickers, I will be very surprised. LINE makes its money from its cool stickers -- who on LINE wants to be the nerdy kid in glasses doing their parents' bidding by sending approved stickers?

All internet communication can be monitored in Thailand. That includes, Line, Facebook and all the websites you've visited or commented on.

If you would get caught or not doing something illegal probably just depends on much noise you make and how they dislike you.

The main source of news for Thai people nowadays must be facebook - all the rest is heavily censored.
I think in no time facebook will be blocked on the number of people going to jail for 112 will seriously increase, which, in the end, I think, would be a very good thing ....

Thank you for taking care of what I watch on the internet, what I say in debate and what I send on my phone!

What would I do without you?!coffee1.gif

Poor, poor Thai politicians and other leaders. Life was so much easier before this new invention, known as the internet, came along and spoiled everything.

To be honest, i would suggest to shut down the internet completely in Thailand. If the beloved PM wants real happiness, he should consider this crucial step. Look the North Koreans. The most happy People.

According to BP-online:

Amendments to the 1994 Copyright Act will strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights in Thailand and improve online responsibility say experts.

In other words more censorship!

Slowly but surely they are tightening the screw.

However, unlike China which has it's own version of just about everything from car brands like BYD, Chery and Great Wall, to credit card companies like Unionpay to instant chat messengers (the topic of this thread) like WeChat, Thailand doesn't have it's own brands for anything. So it would be hard to completely shut down any foreign chat messenger service because Thailand can't offer it's own viable alternative.

One reason why the Chinese shut down LINE in their own territory is because they claim they can't monitor what is being sent across it's network and are fearful of extremists (Xinjiang extremists were cited) that may use it to communicate between each other. In reality maybe they don't like it because it's Japanese and they don't want any competitors to WeChat (or weixin in Chinese).

That's because while LINE doesn't work in China (except briefly during the occasional Great Wall of China firewall glitch or if you use a VPN), Skype works perfectly well, and as we all know, Skype is just as good as LINE, just it doesn't make as much use of the childish stickers that LINE does. Perhaps that explains why LINE is much more popular in Thailand than Skype, but Skype is more popular in the west.

I probably would have downloaded them even though they were not enticing, since they were free. But now that I am told they come with a loaded gun, the risk is too high. I will not download them for my own safety.

I may have missed a previous poster mentioning this but I did wonder if it was 500 Bhat to create the sitickers and 6500000 Bht to construct the trojan horse virus to put in the stickers. In other words downloading the silly things has the potential to make it easier to monitor thai users.

My inclination and advise would be to avoid the silly things like poison

BANGKOK, Dec 23 -- The government has launched free-download Line stickers to promote Thailand's core values.

Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Yuthavong, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Minister Pornchai Rujiprapa, and Science and Technology Minister Pichet Durongkaveroj jointly unveiled the Bt7.1 million project for users of the chat application today.

The project is part of the policy of Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha to build a good society through these 12 values.

They are upholding the countrys three key pillars the nation, the religion and the monarchy; honesty, sacrifice and endurance; gratitude to parents, guardians and teachers; eagerness to acquire knowledge directly and indirectly; treasuring the precious Thai tradition; maintaining morality, integrity, well-wishing for others; understanding, learning the true essence of democratic ideals with His Majesty the King as the Head of State; maintaining discipline, respectful of laws and the elderly and seniority; being conscious and mindful of action in line with His Majestys the Kings statements; practicing the philosophy of Sufficiency Economy of His Majesty the King; saving money for time of need; being moderate with surplus used for sharing or expansion of business while having good immunity; maintaining both physical and mental health and unyielding to the dark force or desires, having sense of shame over guilt and sins in accordance with the religious principles; putting the public and national interest before personal interest.

The new 12 stickers, one for each value, will be available for free download for 30 days from December 30.

At the press conference, Mr Yongyuth said the 12 values compiled by the prime minister are for the public to follow. They are easy to memorize and to be used in everyday life, he said.

Mr Yongyuth said the project is a joint cooperation among the ICT Ministry, Science and Technology Ministry, and Culture Ministry. The stickers are designed by an artist named "GPEN."

The deputy prime minister said the government expects around 3-3.5 million downloads of the stickers.

Meanwhile, Mr Pornchai said the cost of the project is not too high and he is confident that the money spent on the project will worth every baht.

He said Japan-based Line Cooperation agrees to cut the cost of the project from Bt7.8 million as a New Year gift for Thai people following rounds of negotiations. (MCOT online news)

The day the cops come and kick your door down and put you in chains for something like criticizing the Koh Tao investigation on social media is the day that you know Thailand is truly broken.

It won't ever get that bad though. Well, I guess we'll see about that.

For example, the values encourage filial piety towards parents, guardians and teachers, morality, integrity, generosity, and sharing.

I wonder who got to share the 7.1 million Baht (inc GST).

I am fairly certain the cost of stickers is what Thailand was charged by Line to include the stickers on their app.

Wrong.

I can afford to live here because I work here. Since I'm only a legal alien I still have no right to remain here and could be send back to the Netherlands.

Now as for my post, it would seem that o.a. wikileaks and Snowden and so have given a clear picture as to surveillance in the West. So when someone suggest that the PM should pick up some tips on surveillance while in China, I just wonder if he couldn't get better tips in the West, especially from our favorite watchers NSA, GCHQ and down South the Australian equivalent.

If you think telling the truth and wondering about it is contemptible, I think you seem to have a problem facing reality.

As far as I know you can still anonymously buy (prepaid-)SIM-Cards in Thailand or use old ones that hadn't been registered. And even if that is not possible, you could still use foreign SIM-Cars from for example Laos, Cambodia or even any european country via roaming within thailand. Or you could send and receive LINE-messages to and from Thailand while you and your phone is abroad in Singapore or UK. So what sense makes a monitoring of messages? What would they do if there were any illegal information or propaganda? Block the account? I am not sure if that is technically possible for the police or the military. Arrest the sender or receiver of the offending Bytes and Downloads? How? If they don't have his adress (unregistered SIM-Card)? Are they going to install IMSI-Catchers in the streets of Bangkok? But even then you would have hundreds of Devices in one single GPRS-cell in downtown Sukhumvit....

It is little bit related to this topic. For everyone who wants a non government monitored messaging solution, I recommend "Threema". I know it is not for free but for just around 3$ you will get a save and encrypted messenger solution "Made in Switzerland"
