CDC panel mulls proposal to make MPs more independent

BANGKOK: -- Future members of the parliament will be more independent from the control of their respective political parties under one of the proposals being mulled by a panel of the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC).

Dr Jate Thonavanik, chairman of the panel, said today that the panel was considering three proposals for the reform of political parties. Besides the proposal that MPs should be more independent from the control of their parties, the parties too should be transformed into political institutions.

Moreover, the financial status of political parties must be subjected to close scrutiny to ensure transparency, said Dr Jate, adding that the panel was mulling the idea of primary vote – process in which the public should have the right of participation in selecting the election candidates.

He went on saying that the panel also considered an idea of allowing the public the right to check the performance of the MPs and to remove them from the offices – a monitoring process which is different from impeachment.

There may be a difference between selling you vote and being paid, indirectly through his political party, by a corrupt criminal to vote to his orders and benefit, but the difference is very small. To me, it is a crime not just of abuse of office, but akin to treason, and deserves a similar penalty.

MPs should be paid a reasonable amount by the state, all other income banned, and gifts of value over a nominal sum reportable. Simple, clear and ENFORCED rules would eliminate many of the problems of Thai governments.

Why not make an MP's primary responsibility that of their electorate.... the electorate of residents rather than an electorate of bornheredonethat.....

All you need to do is do what the people want not what you the CDC want, stop trying to mull too hard as you are starting to give the population goose bumps, you are actually interfering in the reforms, these are not reforms they are just old Junta standards being rehashed, what about fully elected members of the house of reps and the Senate , any expenditure that involves the treasury or Thailand's finances , the senate as a house of review then decides on how the countries money spent not the limited few as before, ref to Westminster for more info or contact me , I feel sure you know how to.coffee1.gif

So the idea that the CDC will recommend Germany's Multi-Member Party system to the NRC has NOT been accepted after all. Now suddenly there are more discussions to make Thai MP's more controlled independent from political parties. For every turn towards a participatory democratic process, there are two turns against. It would appear that the Junta cannot accept any existing democratic electoral system in the world for Thailand. That's understandable as those systems do not lend themselves to military coups. That's hardly what I'd call REFORM.

Could this be because the army has absolutely no love at all for the type of freedom created by a democracy.

They are trying to unearth a form of command and control democracy that doesn't exist.

Dream on..neither side is giving up their power. The CDC is gutless, and will become marginalized altogether.thumbsup.gif

We are experiencing a hiatus. A hiatus that is making things worse.

No twelve doctrines will make the poor less unhappy about being poor, and Prem made it worse, with his smug smile and patent arrogance, pretending to be the Voice of HM, the Great King, whose respect and love has been earned and revered.

Things are in a state of suspension, simply because many (too many) think Thais are stupid,

Thais ARE NOT STUPID. Their patience will outlive this coup, no matter how many people are sent to camps. Every single soul sent to "readjustment" is a martyr, and the voices of martyrs cannot be silenced.

Okay, we have a bad situation, so lets make it worse.for the sake of appearances...my heart is heavy over this, very heavy.

Idiots. All they have to do is help the majority, that's it -- no wild ideas required. But they won't do that.

Greed is not Buddhism, no matter how much merit you make. People all have the right to pursue happiness--no guarantees in that, but opportunity. Denying people opportunity is tyrannical. Plain and in matter of fact and true. Of course some people are more valuable than others, but that is no reason to assume all below are worthless.

We should all help each other, and it is not altruism, but a matter of survival. Our species is not a necessity for this universe. It is our burden to make ourselves meaningful. I hope the PM knows what he is doing. This ship has 75 million lives inside...and each one is important.

Happy New Year, PM Prayuth Chan-ocha. You have my respect and best wishes. I hope you know that all foreigners are not your enemy. Some of us are decent human beings.

I'm not sure how making MPs more independent means that the MMP system has not been accepted.

As you have attached your rant to my post for no apparent reason, I feel pressed to comment lest your ideas be associated with my own.

I think that the average Thai is pretty thick, ill-educated and politically naive. You might not like that, but it doesn't make it less true, and the difference in perception may well be relative. The problem is that 50% of Thais are even less well-equipped than the average, and that is about enough to elect the venal scum that offers the best bribes and/or tells the most convincing lies. That "representative of the people" is then open to the best offer, and we end up with like of Thaksin running the country.

Having MPs declare their income (state salary only) and keeping a close scrutiny, removes the incentive for the venal to become politicians. What use is power to the venal if they can't sell it? Without the promise of (illegitimate) wealth, why would they offer electoral bribes to the hoi polloi?

The majority of Thais have NO say in government. They elect a representative. For good government they need to present the best MP they can find.

Ok then lead by example and give us the financial status of the military junta the current PM and generals and how they obtained their great wealth from relatively small incomes.

Transparency right?
