Constipated goldfish gets gold-plated surgical treatment

London (dpa) - A constipated goldfish cost its owner 300 pounds (460 US dollars) in veterinary bills to get its bowels working properly again, a news report said Friday.

Veterinarian Faye Bethell, who performed the 50-minute operation assisted by two veterinary nurses, had to bubble anaesthetic through the water in an operating tank to knock out the 7-centimetre fish.

"At the end of the day, they’re all pets and everybody does have a commitment to their pet," Bethell, who runs the Toll Barn Veterinary Centre in North Walsham, Norfolk, told the BBC.

A "lump" blocking the fish’s bottom caused the constipation.

"Obviously we discussed all the options and he made the decision to go for surgery."

Reading the article yesterday, it admittedly did raise an eyebrow but then again why not do it?

At the time, the thing that struck me was how much the vet chose to charge, rather than the woman's decision.

I know that some fish are worth a lot of money, but this is mostly in Asia and especially among the Chinese.

why not! i just spent over 40k on having this fish groomed tail cut even fat taken out behind his eyes - same as a cat or dog for us fish lovers!!

Whats next 80k on eye surgery in Russia because your Sushi can't read the menu anymore. I hope your kids and your old parents get the loving care.

How about what the fish has to say? Let's get some animal rights here.
