We're in Chiang Mai. What can he do to get another 30 days?

He can go to immigration in CM and get a 30 day extension.

He can get a 30 day extension of his visa exempt entry at immigration for a fee of 1900 baht.

If he was to go to Mae Sai he would probably be turned back and be told to go to immigration for the extension. There have been reports of this happening.

If he plans on staying longer than 2 months he should go out for a tourist visa.
