Medical Check Question

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I've just been offered a teaching job and been told I need to undergo a medical check in the UK and again once I arrive in Thailand for the purpose of my work permit.

Now, I'm a frequent visitor to Thailand and understand the laws on drugs. Additionally, I wouldn't dream of taking any in the country.

However, I am partial to a smoke of MJ and have been smoking recently in my home country. The problem is I was offered this job after all smoking had commenced, I am due to arrive in Thailand in 2 weeks, and I'm worried they'll test for MJ!

So - is it common to be tested for MJ during the medical for a teaching position? Should I just turn down the job now to avoid being jailed upon arrival? sad.png

If all jokes about paranoia could be avoided and serious replies only, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks in advance

Update - I will be taking this medical in Bangkok.

Not sure how you will get the medical in the UK.

A medical exam is required to get a work permit. I don't recall a drug test being part of it. They normally are only checking for communicable deceases.

I just need a general medical done here in the UK which is already booked. Apparently so I can be put on this Bupa healthcare thing. During which I'll have a urinalysis etc, not sure if that's for drugs or not either, or just general kidney problems etc.

Good to know the medical over there isn't likely to include a test, enough to stress about as it is.

If anyone else has any experience I'd appreciate it also!

They only check for Meth use, taking a urine sample

Apparently so I can be put on this Bupa healthcare thing.

If the urine sample is for BUPA, the consequences would only be a matter of your medical insurance. BUPA doesn't share information with immigrations or the police. Whether or not they inform your potential employer about their willingness to insure you or if the medical information passes through the hands of the employer en route to BUPA is another matter, though I'm sure BUPA would consider specific results to be confidential.

Call BUPA UK anonymously and ask them if some MJ use would affect an application for medical insurance.
