BANGKOK — Several dozen people gathered in central Bangkok Thursday evening to honor those killed in the deadly attack on a satirical magazine in France yesterday.

The group lit candles and lay flowers around signs printed with the words “Je Suis Charlie” and other phrases that have come to symbolize solidarity with the satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, that was the target of the shooting.

Two masked gunmen broke into the magazine’s office in Paris yesterday and opened fire on journalists and cartoonists who were gathered for an editorial meeting, killing twelve, including two police officers.

“I could not sleep last night after I heard about the news, and when I woke up the next day I felt like I needed to do something,” said Chiranuch Premchaiporn, a journalist at Prachatai who helped organize the vigil in front of the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center.

Witnesses say the gunmen screamed “Allahu Akbar” during the shooting, which the President of France has labeled an “act of terrorism.” The magazine regularly poked fun at religions, including Islam, and was firebombed in 2011 after it published a spoof issue “guest edited” by the Prophet Muhammad.

Shortly after the massacre, crowds began gathering in cities around the world to condemn the attack, with many holding up pens and pencils to show their support for free speech.

Regardless of the "solidarité" the Imams of Europe and governments of the Middle East show in condemnation of the attack on free speech, it is, non-the-less, their religion that condemns to death (worldwide) anyone who exercises free speech if they find it offensive to their religion. Nothing will change until these same Islamic Imams and governments challenge publicly and in law, the blasphemy executions perpetuated in the Islamic nations.

How can the French govt know which of its citizens are going to turn to scum?

Or are you just claiming all members of one faith are scum.

Nah, doubt any one could be that bigoted.

From the BBC today

"Dr Shuja Shafi, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, also condemned the attack - believed to be in response to cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

"Nothing is more immoral, offensive and insulting against our beloved Prophet than such a callous act of murder," he said.

A group of 15 UK imams released a statement saying "cold-blooded murder such as this is the antithesis of Islam and its tenets".

There was an equally outright condemnation from one of the leading centres of Sunni Islamic teaching in Egypt yesterday.

Yes these killers are scum.

However they are not representative of any faith.

of course BLABLA BLA but doing nothing to their followers

Stricter gun control laws might a possibility. I understand the police, at least in Paris, are not armed.

Unarmed French police retreat from Islamist attackers - hotair.com

Current firearm policy - France

"In France, the right to private gun ownership is not guaranteed by law" (not to mention law enforcement officials)

Blah blah blah appears to be something you are expert in.

With a large slice of BS as a side order as well.

All i know is those mocking cartoons have angered a billion of Muslim around the world and it was intended to do so cause the journal had some financial issues at that time, they knew the risk and still they commit their mockeries so i see that they provoked those ^scums^ that BSJ had previously called to kick them all out from France he meant all the immigrant France which represent 6 millions of France and that is called pure racism but since such a provocation was committed 3 years back no one would have speculated such a terror act,the Muslim condemns the murder of innocent lives but i dough to see in any Muslim country someone standing and defending that news paper that have angered an entire religion,a lot will say SOMNOMNA they just got what they deserve which in my opinion i don't think they deserve to die,if i were the attackers i would burn the home of the publisher and his car and the author but all the rest and the 2 policeman who were killed they were just doing their job, people can't just come and decide who will die and who will live no matter what they have done justice will be done by god not by man

As Egypt's President al-sisi as called for in a recent and extraordinary speech (PJ Media), which the MSM has largely ignored (hypothesize the reason).

The lengths that people go to, to connect themselves with tragedy to feel as if they're good knows no bounds

And long may it continue.

Its an outpouring of fake grief by the Facebook generation just looking for a slightly different event to stick on their thread so their friends who they don't really know think they're enlightened. <snip>

Al-Sisi is not the only leader in the Islamic world who has called for action, indeed one Islamic groups' core tenants (Ahmadi Muslims) is denouncing Islamic extremism, yet rare to read any reports about them. Most people will dismiss out of hand any effort to commence a movement to bring about change, unfortunately thus reenforcing the Islamic extremist message.

Well, now, France with this outrage can join Pakistan & Nigeria with their girls' school massacres & kidnapping for brides, And England with it's subway bombing and murder of the off duty guardsman.

Have any of them got enough b@//s to step around the PC nonsense & see this for what it is; fascist attacks to overthrow governments & set up Sharia law states. IN parts of UK the police don't go so they have defacto Sharia law already in places. This is not going to get better unless governments have the guts to act strongly & definitively on the viper nest training mosques in their midst.

There is also an unusual situation in this country regarding freedom of speech that does not exist anywhere else in the civilized (or semi-civilized) world. It is long overdue for abolishing for it's potential for abuse.

See that the apologists are out in force today!!

Time to call a spade a spade!!

Toronto, Sydney and now Paris are not just a few rotten apples, but a symptom of an imported illness, and unless the West wakes up it will continue and get even worse.

Of course the imams in the west is doing the PC thing and condemning the attacks, all the same time they are laughing behind our backs!

This is not a question about freedom of religion, but a question about defending our own values in our own countries. Time to close the borders for new arrivals, and for those already in our countries: Integrate or leave!!

Time to put the foot down: No more killings in the name of Allah (or any other fictitious figure)

Not racist, but realist!!

Here is my 2 Satang:

I find it very difficult to only call it an act of terror, done by some misguided lunatics and find no "connection" to the religious aspect.

The did it as Muslims, in the name of Islam and in the name of the Prophet Mohammed and in the name of their imaginary friend in the sky!

No one can discuss this fact away!

Did they do it in the name of all Muslims?

Nope!

As Christopher Hitchens once said: Religion poisons everything!

And the ones who are now ranting on about how bad Islam as a total is and how all Muslims er potential killers...I can make a safe bet, that right now, as I am writing this, somewhere a fanatic Christian is planing to kill a gay- person or an abortion- doctor in the name of Jesus!

In Myanmar a Buddhist monk is beating up a Rohinga!

Someone, with a very religious backrgound, is planing an "ethnic- cleansing"!

In Germany, extreme right-wingers and Neo- Nazis have their head exploding, because they don't know, if they should celebrate 4 dead members of the "left wing lying press" or have a field day, because Muslim- terror acts are water on their mills.

Extremism - religious, political...- is always bad!
