Top officials meet over Thai border stand-off

Featured Replies

Senior military officials met yesterday with their Thai counterparts to resolve a border dispute that has seen troops bolstered and a crossing blocked in the past week.

Major General Phat Sophen, chief of the Cambodian-Thai Border Relations Office in Preah Vihear, said the meeting was held at the An Ses, or Chong Arn Mar, border crossing yesterday morning.

“It produced a fruitful result and the Thai side promised us that they will reopen the An Ses border gate” today, Sophen said. The gate was closed and about 200 Thai troops deployed after Cambodia began roadwork in an area it claims but that Thailand says had previously been agreed on as neutral territory.

Another military official confirmed that Cambodia had ceased all building activity since last week.

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

That's good news but hopefully things won't deteriorate again in the future. What's needed is co-operation between the two sides, not animosity, jealousy or references to long passed history.
