Today at Jomtien immigration, was told can renew retirement extension not more than 1 month early and income letter not more than 1 month old.

The income letter can be up to 6 months old unless Jomtien has decided that on their own. Suspect you just got some wrong info.

A few weeks ago I renewed my extension at Jomtien about 40 days before it expired and the affidavit from the US embassy was several months old. I spent no more than a few minutes completing the process and then collected the passport the next day. No one asked me any questions or commented on the timing of the application or the affidavit.

Did you ask about either issue first or did they look at your documents and then tell you this? Probably best not to ask.

Immigration made it officially 6 months back in June of 2013.

See here for a copy of the notice sent out to the offices. PCEC-NOTICE-THAI-IMMIGRATION-NEWS-JUNE-6.pdf

I did my extension with one that was a little over 4 months old last year.

You can apply for an extension 45 days early at some offices or 30 days at others.

They might do it earlier at some offices if you told them you have trip out of the country planned and have a ticket to prove it.
