george
A 10-month-old girl dies after falling from a balcony BANGKOK: -- A 10-month-old Bangkok girl fell to her death from a balcony on Thursday after her mother left her alone in the bedroom. Praewa Rinchalee was admitted to Kasemrat Hospital around noon on Wednesday with a cracked skull and bleeding in the brain. She died yesterday. Ratchadaporn, 33, left her baby sleeping alone on the fourth floor of their home in Ramkhamhaeng while she went downstairs. The door to the balcony was still open. Ratchadaporn said she heard her baby scream so she ran upstairs and found the girl was not in bed. She rushed out to the balcony where she looked down to the ground and saw her baby lying motionless. She said her daughter might have crept out on the balcony to look for her after she woke up and then slipped through the bars. Police plan to summon the mother for questioning after the baby's funeral. -- The Nation 2006-08-

Charma
I guess the mother will be blaming herself enough for this over the coming years. I cannot imagine the utter devastation that such circumstances must cause.
Alreadyinuse
This is very common in Thailand, I would not say it is Thai style. I have seen it alot and I reacted when my son and daughter was allowed to play quite close to the road. I was used to Sweden but should a Swede see this they would report it to the authorithies. Up to 6 years old a child is well protected and cared for but after that or close at least it seams as the degree of independence of and trust in the child is rediculously high. They speed up on motorbikes like they have a deathwish..
Cigarette Burn
Reminded me of Eric Clapton's four year-old son, Conor, who fell 53 floors to his death through the open window of a New York skyscraper. Just shows it can happen to anyone, anywhere in the world. Please don't be to hard on the Mother, we realy don't have the right to lay blame on a public internet forum. RIP

uk_falang
There seem to be a fair amount of people, Thailand and foreigners who fall from balconies. Perhaps this is inappropriate - but yes the police should question the mother.
Scott
Absolutely the mother should be questioned. I lived in a small condo here for a time and the mother next door, NEVER left her child unattended. More than once I was asked to keep an eye on the baby for a few seconds while she did something. Certainly, leaving a child unattended while you go downstairs requires some investigation. My very deepest sympathies to the parents and family members. It's a horrible thing to have happen to them.
