Thaivisa is overloaded with rants from Westerner foreigners complaining about some Thailand law, Thai cultural practice, or Thai personality factors. These Ranters seem not to have been forced to settle in Thailand and yet demand this FOREIGN SOVEREIGN NATION be just like their favorite aspect of the place they moved out from. (Note, the non-ranters just want or provide plain info with no complaints and thaivisa is ideal for their messages, of course.) And, yes, I know this is a rant about Ranters.

Ranters, think about these facts:

-Thailand has gotten along, alone, for centuries without your input and firmly feels it can continue for more centuries without your ideas.

-Thai people firmly feel they are right, and nothing you say will change that, even if Thai are too polite to say that to your face.

-Thailand understands the dangers of adopting Western ideas and ways and thus has laws and rules to limit local practice of those ideas by

(a. limiting incoming ideas and competition via work permitting.

(b. not making rampant open resettlement here by tight immigration rules.

(c. watching foreigners here, enough of whom have proved to have undesirable qualities to justify watching--such as alcoholism/addictions, running from the law elsewhere, conducting illegal biz here, or are part of international criminal gangs. (think Periodic Reporting).

(d. in Thailand, your Westernized ideas about personal behavior, political rights, and how nice you should be treated are just WRONG here.

(e. your spending money in Thailand represents a tiny part of the economy and Thailand feels it knows it can do without all you may bring in and spend; i.e., you are just not at all economically important here.

(f. change is not automatically a good thing.

(g. Buddhism is not a silly superstition and does not need any of your adjustments to it.

(h. Thai women are not cute little brown servants.

There are more for this list. However, Ranters, try harder to Get Real about the facts of living here and just relax. I wish more thaivisa writers could offer help to Ranters who lack any other mode to let off steam but need help in adapting, much help.

How to adapt and live happily in Thailand......

-when angry, punch a pillow in private, or learn better anger control.

-love your partner, wife, etc. for themselves, not as you wish them to be.

-always have a Thai citizen "front" for you for everything from ordering food to dealing with Thai government.

-never expect a Thai to follow your orders to the letter and do not give more than one request at a time.

-kindly laugh WITH a Thai asking for too much money, like tuk tuks, and compliment him on his sound capitalist ways.

-at least read about Buddhism so you can see it is a rational life philosophy with many good aspects and not superstitions.

-realize you live in Thailand primarily TO RELAX... this is your central life goal here and main reason to reside here.

Usually they attempt to feed me too.

Not to mention plucking excess nasal and ear hair and popping zits.

OP sounds utterly spineless as he laughs along with and compliments those who are attempting to rip him off. OP clearly has no self-sufficiency in Thailand since he "always" has a Thai fronting for him, even when buying food.

It's quite simple: OP stop being so damn lazy and learn the correct prices for things, learn some of the language of your adopted country and stand up for yourself. Then, try actually being outside tourist areas and get out of your English speaking, second babyhood bubble and find out that most Thais are not going to over-charge you at all.

You might actually have some quality interactions with the natives along the way, beyond that one that married you and wipes your chin for you. Try not being so paranoid and being so concerned about others, life's too short.

How ironic this guy thinks he's got something to say about people not adapting well here. This topic is the yin to the yang of the one by the kid who thinks he's got advice for newbies.

Thai Buddhism is full of superstitions otherwise the Amulet market would be dead.

I do not know about that. I will admit that he is somewhat annoyingly know it all and self-righteous. My take on Thai bashers is not quite the same. They are for the most part wretched creatures who indulge in absurd and malicious speculation as though it were the truth. Or mischaracterize for denigrating purposes.
