Hi I have recently had a house built in my wife's village and noticed there is no gutter on the roof is the norm*

I would say it's normal for most houses but you can get them.

My house does not have gutters. I opted for putting awnings on the windows and doors as it helps protect from the sun as well as the rain.

Yep, it's normal to not have gutters, unless some part of the roof is right on the property line.

They are pretty inexpensive to add on later, if needed.

Most villages will get a visit by a man in a pickup selling gutters every month or so.. as a guide, galvanized Bluescope Steel gutters go for around 200-250 Baht/meter, fitted.

I have gutters on the back of my house. The main reason is to collect rain water for drinking purposes and to use when the local water supply is dry. They drain into 12 ongs. I pump water from one of them directly into a second faucet in the kitchen and rely on submersible pumps to transfer water from the others as needed.

Most of the Thai houses around me have some type of guttering system to collect the run off as the water supply here is intermittant. The gutter might be pieces of bent metal roofing.

I installed mine 16 years ago and everything is still in good condition. I installed everything my self including soldering the gutters. I have about 44 meters of gutters with 8 down pipes. The down pipes are attached to 3" plastic hoses so that they can be moved to fill the ongs. The 2 meter joints of galvanized gutter are not expensive and available at building supply stores, but I don't know today's price. The ongs cost me 500 baht each but my wife says that the guy that comes by with a truck full now sells them for 1000 - 1200 baht. I pump water from ong to ong and to my SS tank for the house with a submersible pump, cost 1600 baht. I pump water from one of the ongs to a faucet in my kitchen for drinking with a automatic shut-off irrigation pump. It cost me 1250 baht, but they now sell for 2750 baht - same one.

When I first installed it I had it all plumbed from the down spouts with 2" PVC but removed it all because it was constantly being clogged with leaves and replaced it with the plastic hoses so that when the ongs are full the water just runs onto the ground.

We have gutters and have huge problems with starlings nesting in the down pipes and in the gutters themselves. If you put them in, make sure the down-pipes are easy to remove and clean as we have to do ours twice a year. They get completely chocked with those nests.

Yup, I made some simple wire mesh 'nest preventers', the birds now nest on the top but at least the downpipes don't block so often.

I have a long tube with a drain-clearing nozzle on the end that attaches to the pressure washer. Feed up from the bottom of the downpipe (wear your bathing costume, you will get wet) to avoid climbing on the roof.
