Spreading happiness by legally letting everyone do sod all.

I have a patch in my new garden. I plan to sod it all with paspalum grass this weekend. Hopefully my grass will be still green in early May, otherwise I'll have to do sod all again.

Good way to spread happiness by the government, great for the people if its a paid holiday, bad for company owners who have to pick up the tab.

They will only have 2 weeks to recover from Songkran and then another round of mayhem.

No wonder there is all this crime about , nobody has got any money , to many holidays.

I assume they add so many holidays in an attempt to cool down the untamable growth of the economy. Not?

Anthony, you do realise that most of the Thai workers are not entitled to any holidays during the year, except the public holidays?

No I don't realize that, because all of the Thai workers I know have 2 days a month to take.

Cabinet approves May 4 extra holiday, making five-day weekend

BANGKOK: -- The Cabinet Tuesday approved May 4 as an extra holiday, making a five-day weekend from Friday May 1 to Tuesday May 5, Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said.

The first of May is the National Labour Day while the fifth of May is the Coronation Day.

Kobkarn said the Cabinet expected that the extra holiday and long weekend would help boost tourism in the country by about ten per cent.

There you have it! Extra days means extra tourist money spent. Why wouldn't they approve such a thing since tourism is down internationally. They have to make it up from their own people. I just hope they don't ban drinking on this long weekend holiday.

Unfortunately you have to earn it before you spend it

No I don't realize that, because all of the Thai workers I know have 2 days a month to take.

But most will also work a 6 day week.

Thais are not entitled to floating holidays such as the ones that European workers enjoy.

As mentioned by Costas, 'Thai workers are not entitled to any holidays during the year, except the public holidays', which means that as everyone is on holiday at the same time and all want to go home the roads to Issarn are jammed.

For a 3 or 4 day Songkran holiday a Thai can spend about 50% of the holiday travelling (stuck in traffic).

The (extra) holidays that you see in the Thai news are almost entirely for government and bank workers (sometimes for teachers) and make no difference to labourers, shop assistants or factory workers.

If an employer does offer these extra holidays, they will take them off the other holiday dates or give them as unpaid leave.

Just another way to buy votes and get the "people" to love the Bangkok elite and the Junta appointed NLA.

It is just unfortunate that the poor rural farmer's and all the other poor people in Thailand won't be able to enjoy it. They must work to put food on the table. However, government workers will be able to enjoy this new holiday very well indeed.

Did PT not do the same thing at points during their rule?

As if they don't have enough holidays to get drunk and kill more people on the roads as it is.

my wife work with a big foreign company - 8 wd holidays per year !!

how much you have in most countries on globe ??

At least the powers-that-be didn't wait until the week immediately prior to the "extra holiday" to consider doing this, as would usually happen.

So all other industries must suffer so the tourism lobby group is happy?

The irony is of all the thais I know that do travel during these extended extra long weekends, about half of them travel internationally.

We're talking about Thailand, not socialist Europe where doing sod all is a multinational past-time. Most Thais would love to work just 35 hours a week like the Europeans who ... surprise, surprise ... now find their economies collapsing.

Most working Thais have long hours and few days off. They don't close hotels, restaurants, convenience stores, malls, etc on holidays. People have to show up to work as usual.

Europe, the hub of doing sod all. I don't agree with Maggie about much, but she must be smiling now as things fall apart in Greece and elsewhere.

Good for the golf courses who can charge top rates on those days. Just an example.
