does a thai national need a passport to cross overland to malaysia or can they use thier id card

Hi all, I can only find old posts on this. Can a Thai travel to Malaysia with only the id card or is a passport needed? I know certain border provinces could obtain border passes but is this still the case? Either way we are not an order province.

The rules are the same.

I went last year with a Thai and am heading there this summer as well. The Thai national needs a passport. Not a visa. And an ID card is not accepted. They can stay one month only. At least last year that was the rule at Sungai Kolok.

Very easy for me as an American also. Only need a passport. But, I can stay for three months. If needed make sure you get a travel visa from Thailand. If you leave from Thailand and have a retirement visa here you need to purchase a re-entry permit.
