Lite Beer
Govt officials banned from using work computers after case of lese majesteThe Nation BANGKOK: -- THE DEPARTMENT of Provincial Administration has decided to impose stricter controls on computer usage in its offices after one of its officials in Sa Kaew province allegedly posted a comment that was deemed as violating the lese majeste law.Earlier this week, the department issued an order requiring all supervisors to ensure that none of their subordinates used state-owned computers to post any messages that might constitute criminal offence, even if it is via their personal accounts in social media applications such as Facebook or Line. The order said if any official was found to have committed such an offence via state-owned devices, their supervisors would be held responsible too.Grisada Boonrach, the department's director-general, said the order was issued in response to an alleged lese majeste offence committed early this month."We are not restricting our officials' rights or liberties. We only want to ensure they won't use state-owned computers to cause any damage," she said. Popular Post EyesWideOpen
When I read these headlines, I keep having the thought of writing a comedy book, which would be comprised entirely from headlines on TV. So government workers can no longer use their computers ?? You simply could not make this stuff up. I certainly realize the body of the story is indicating that workers cannot use their work computers for posting LM messages, but the visual image from the headline is still funny... So one worker writing something the government does not like, and suddenly there is a nation wide ban ? Sure hope that some farang does not do something the government does not like, and the rest of us are deported.....

timewilltell
Probably a good idea since many public officials are too stupid to use a computer.

Right..., they just want to put officials in jail for not being able to monitor their employees 24/7. How can anyone do that? The laws and orders coming out every day in this country are getting more and more onerous and draconian. You can see the power getting more and more addicting everyday for those who are not accountable to the public anymore.

I thought exactly the same thing except I was wondering how they could be banned from using something that most of them don't know how to use anyway. h90
Just stop these offices having internet communications completely. They don't use it for work anyway as databases are very rarely linked. you could make a white list of pages that are needed. That are for the lower officials just a few government pages. For highers some more if they have to look up some other countries things. Facebook, bit torrent, twitter, is surely not one these pages. For higher it could be a blacklist, with some staff always checking the log files and blocking what is not work related....
h90
Just wipe all of the ******* copies of Windows off all government computers and the problem will be solved. Blank computers. That would be perfect, government can still buy computers and cash in the 10 % under the table and the officials don't make nonsense with the computers. Robby nz
Fair enough, they are supposed to be there to work not to play facebook or anything else. The computers are work tools not toys, if they want to play they can do it in their own time on their own computers or I phones or whatever, when they are not getting paid by the tax payer. But those who have sat in Govt offices all their lives probably wont recognize the concept of working in paid time, possibly not even sure what the word 'work' means.

They can no longer use the state owned computers for social media. Good idea, it could increase productivity. Another good step would prohibit them from using state owned computers to play games too! The concept of working and not playing may be hard for some to grasp. I also think making the supervisors responsible for preventing improper use is a good move. Supervisors may be forced to supervise in order to cover their butts. Now, to deal with the huge loop hole of using their personal computers and smart phones at work to mess around, will be the next necessary step to make this work.
