I thought it was illegal to dance naked in Thailand. Does anyone know what the law is regarding top less and naked dancing?

I'll try to explain how to tell if something in Thailand is legal or illegal concerning vice. If the police are paid (regularly, on time, enough), then the casino, whorehouse, etc. is legal. If the police are not paid (regularly, on time, enough), then it is illegal. If you want to operate a legal business in Thailand, you must either pay taxes (legitimate business) or pay the police (vice based business). It's all very simple.

The article mentioned child prostitution. I have never seen or even overheard rumors of it in any of my trips to Thailand. I read a few things online now and then, and I have no doubt it happens, especially in some of those karaoke bars.

Underage prostitutes are popular with Thai politicians, ranking police/military and others of power and wealth, from what I have read over the years on who gets arrested. They have had all the legal age poontang and it is not exciting to them anymore. It is also a status to obtain the forbidden or (nominally) unobtainable. From what I have read, non-Thai perverts go to Cambodia where money talks louder than morals (even more so than in Thailand). When I used to go to Chiang Mai, it was common to see posters asking for people to report older foreigners accompanying Thai minors and included a phone number to make the report to. Pedophilia may be a sickness but it is also a heinous crime on the victim and should be punished with life-long incarceration.

So what is the age of consent in Thailand? Thai law states that the age of consent is 15 years of age. But to confuse matters a little, when it comes to commercial sex, that is prostitution, the age of consent is not 15, but 18. To really confuse matters even further, there are laws that state that those under 20 are not allowed to enter certain establishments, although this is not an age of consent issue as such, but a law related to alcohol consumption. http://www.stickmanweekly.com/Weekly2006/weekly263.htm

Every Thai carries a National Identity Card that proves their age. There is NO excuse for anyone having sex with underage boys or girls in Thailand. (or anywhere else, for that matter)

it can't be stopped. Many families in the rural areas depend on the money sent home that is generated by this industry. Look at all the countries where it is illegal and policed and yet it still goes on.

There is no plan to stop regulated prostitution. This is about unregulated places, trafficked and underage women.

Time will tell.

Those under age will get older anyway.

The rest may not be legal right now, but there may be ways to *make* them legal, laws may change, they may change their behaviour, and many may simply need a good advice what can be done about their situation. Maybe streetworkers to help them, I would at least try that. They may be as illegal as they are, but they are all good in communication (outdoor, not in bed), and you can talk with them in public (not about them)

Maybe police does that now. I see photos from them at police stations quite often now, without police around them, and to me they look like kind of school classes ssometimes. Which imho would not be the worst solution.

How many sex workers are in Thailand, What do you thinK?

Some very authoritative sources estimate that 450,000 Thai men visit a prostitute every day. That is the local prostitution number; not the tourist prostitution number. Foreigners from any country are not welcome where most of the sex workers in Thailand are employed and the raids in the major tourist areas serve no purpose other than political gamesmanship. A simple Google search will provide many good resources regarding the history and current status of prostitution in Thailand and elsewhere. To resolve the issue of sexual slavery several countries have instituted forms of legalization that give women or men sex workers protection under the law which they deserve and removes sex work out of the shadow of "immorality".

In the US has there ever been a good western that did not have the benevolent madam as a central character? Kitty on Gunsmoke was not a bartender and hotel manager! Showing my age there, aren't I?

Actually if you check the recent reports, police have been arresting Thai women for prostitution in several places (Chiang Mai, Phuket), even though they were in their 20s, 30s, 40s and (yes) 50s.

I guess when they can't find trafficked children they'll just arrest Thai women.. :/

I don't think the Thai women in Phuket were arrested, just photographed. It will be interesting to see if the Chiang Mai arrestees are actually charged. Edited by brewsterbudgen

Is this enough to cancel "the Gobra Gold"? Whatever the Cobra means there :)

Just another note: If I remember right the Thai law says (since/from '50s) that Thai ladies can not enter the restaurant without male companion. So I guess a lonely woman in a bar is an illegal act. This law has been brought back ever now and then without much success. Last time it was tried, it was rejected, because of the complains from lesbian community. It is very much discriminating law. I hope it has been demolished already?

Social Laws all over the world are written to suit a powerful few backed by their flock of sheep. I quote Prohibition in the US in the '20s.

Social legislation therefore seldom reflects the real state of either the nation or popular feeling and is it so surprising that the administarive upholders of the law choose not to Police the law to the limit of their power. There is nothing to be gained by smashing a few bottles, the supply is always available. The role of the Police is very properly, not to eliminate the issue, which would cause undue hardship, stress and suffering, but to simply try to ensure that it does not cause problems for the city or the state.

The best way to deal with Prostitution is simply to forget that it is there until it begins to intrude into more important legal areas, as in Child prostitution or Sex-Slavery and then to stamp out the offending elements, simply cauterize the wound and leave it to heal.

The Thai Police can only really be criticized for their off and on treatment of the matter. A consistent approach would be more in keeping with the Thai character and would be accepted by all.

The only way to stop the illegal prostitution is for the venues to ensure the powers that be are not short changed in their kick backs. That way we will not hear about this issue again and it will be all fixed.

Wow64, it was clumsily put, but I agree completely. The old image of downtrodden, drug addicted and diseased girls working alone in a district is 60 years out of date. The supply of, the premises for and the conditions and charges for are all defined and set by that small sector of the population which I talked about earlier. If they are not unhappy, then the " Prostitution problem " will completely disappear because It is easy for the normal person to believe that something they never hear about does not exist.

All too often, the Thai laws are only used when that same ruling class thinks that it is necessary to teach an individual or a group to obey their rules.
