gk10002000
Are there locks or a waterway that will let you take a boat from the gulf of Thailand west over to the Indian Ocean side?

KhunBENQ
There were ever recurring plans to build a canal somewhere near the smallest landbridge. But never realized and will not, Will never pay. So no way to avoid the dangerous pirate ridden Malacca strait. To cut short transport via the Indian ocean there is the Dawai deepsea harbor project. Dawei in Myanmar and then a new railway to Bangkok. Edited February 1, 2015 by KhunBENQ
gerry1011
You must go all the way down to Singapore, and up again. If you have time, it's a nice trip. Your fuel will be a bit expensive though...

Bullie
Locks or waterways no, but at the narrowest point Thailand is only 22 k across.... Should not be too hard to load up your boat on a deeploader, provided it isn't too big??

captnhoy
If you have to ask i doubt that you'd manage that adventure. It is common for boats to be trucked from Chumpon on the gulf side to a ramp in Kra Buri. This puts your boat into a big river that is the border between Myanmar and Thailand. Place the pointy end downstream and you will soon be passing by Ranong and entering the Andaman Sea 300 kilometers North of Phuket.
KhunBENQ
In Hangover 2, they went from Bangkok to Phuket by boat in no time! Ha ha, thats the reference. In a German soap opera they drove from their Chiang Mai hotel with a jeep in a short ride to the beach Gentlemen, get a map and close this thread! Yes, you can if you the right boat, enough time and not afraid of pirates Bangkok to Phuket by boat is a damned long tour via Singapore and the Malacca strait FULL STOP. About 2500 km (1500 miles). keeniau96
I have sailed from Phuket to Singapore several times, both ways, no problems. Never did the Singapore to the head of the Gulf but talked to several sailors who did. There is some piracy toward middle-southern Malacca Straits but they are interested in commercial ships eg. tankers. The Straits get congested nearing Singapore and you have to pay attention to the sea-lanes and traffic directions, much like the English Channel. From Singapore to Royal Varuna Yacht club is a long, uneventful sail except for the occasional typhoon. Per the well-known phrase, sailing is 95% boring and 5% sheer terror. Overall a very long, boring trip but not much real problems.

So if there is a mast involved it will need to be stepped. Your destination is confusing - OP is wanting to go West from the East coast. And you? The same or from Phuket to the East coast?
Thanyaburi Mac
Well, perhaps you can. Check out this venture by Tristan Jones (RIP): http://www.amazon.com/To-Venture-Further-Tristan-Jones/dp/157409064X To Venture Further Paperback – September, 1999 by Tristan Jones (Author) In To Venture Further, Tristan Jones tackles the infamous Kra Peninsula which divides the Andaman Sea from the Gulf of Thailand. Accompanied by his German mate, Thomas, and three disabled Thai youths, he makes his way through this short but exceedingly difficult passage in a small seagoing fishing boat. Tristan and his crew take on floating debris and homemade dams that block their passage. They encounter colorful locals, including a raucous band of teenage monks. Because of a late monsoon season, Tristan is forced to navigate a dry riverbed, where he is towed by southern Thailand's only working elephant. They face mechanical failure and Tristan's funds run precariously low, yet somehow they survive all the incredible obstacles. A memorable exploit of a master storyteller, To Venture Further is an inspiring story that reveals the awesome courage of a man willing to sacrifice all comforts for the unknown and the seemingly impossible. chingmai331
Looks like the Kra Buri river is the natural political boundary between T'land and Burma. And both the river and Burma end at Ranong. Probably few people in that part of Burma. And i fully agree that the Chinese Emperor (Mr. Xi) will have a good sit-down with current T'land PM (The GENERAL) regarding bank accounts and a nice new East-West canal across T'land right about at Ranong. Why involve two countries when one will do?

Kan Win
Most if not all clearing walkways are 5 meters at a Max height. Pease could you write your feet ' and inches " in meters, so that we could really understand. One does know that boats are measured in feet and inches, however Thai Road are measured by meters, would help us a great deal to help you as well, and length 43 ? is that in feet, I think? no sure? Coming back to the 14 tons, on a previous post no problem on Thai Main Roads. Win Edited February 3, 2015 by Kan Win
